Acute Fractures of the Scaphoid
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2000Nondisplaced fractures of the scaphoid heal with cast immobilization in most cases, but operative treatment is being offered with greater frequency to active patients as an approach to reduce the period of cast immobilization. Computed tomography is more useful for evaluating displacement than standard radiography.

Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal, 2012
The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured of the eight carpal wrist bones. The mechanism of injury is usually from a fall on the outstretched hand. Initial radiographs may not identify a scaphoid fracture. A high index of suspicion given to these biomechanics and the physical findings will assist in the identification of this fracture.

Scaphoid fractures are often a difficult management problem, most typically affecting young men in their most active and productive years. A systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment can decrease the risk of management error and morbidity.

Displaced Fractures of the Scaphoid
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1988The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured carpal bone. The displaced fracture poses a particular surgical problem. While scaphoid fractures as a group show a 90%-95% union rate, those fractures with greater than 1 mm of displacement are associated with a 55% incidence of nonunion and a 50% rate of avascular necrosis.

Acute Fractures of the Scaphoid
The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 2006Fractures of the scaphoid must be treated promptly to minimize the risk of malunion and nonunion. Although most scaphoid fractures have been reported to heal well with cast immobilization, advances in surgical techniques have greatly changed the decision-making process for treatment. It is worthwhile to review the different management options for acute

Scaphoid Fractures in Children
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1986Fracture of the carpal scaphoid before skeletal maturity represents 0.34% of all fractures in children and 0.45% of children's upper limb fractures. Seventy-seven children, with a mean age of 11 years (range 8-14 years), suffered a scaphoid fracture in Nottingham, England, between 1977 and 1984 inclusive.

The management of scaphoid fractures
Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2005Appropriate management of scaphoid fractures is important because of the risk of long-term complications such as delayed or non-union, pain and disability. Up to 25% of scaphoid fractures are not visible on the initial radiographs. Consequently, all clinically suspected scaphoid fractures are treated as fractures with cast immobilisation until cause of

Scaphoid fracture epidemiology
Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, 2012The current available literature related to scaphoid fracture epidemiology is inconsistent. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of true scaphoid fractures in a defined adult population.Using a prospective database, we identified all patients who sustained a radiographically confirmed acute fracture of the scaphoid over a 1-year ...

Fracture dislocation of the scaphoid
Injury, 1997A 41-year-old male company director was air lifted to hospital following a road traffic accident. On admission he was noted to have multiple lacerations, with scattered glass fragments, on the dorsum of his dominant right wrist. There was gross limitation of his wrist movement but no neurovascular deficit.
