Occurrence of an agglutinin in Schistosoma mansoni

Abstract A membrane-associated component found in Schistosoma mansoni agglutinates untreated mouse and rat erythrocytes and seems to be a host-independent worm membrane receptor. Its possible role in the host-parasite adaptation mechanism is discussed.

Schistosoma mansoni is progressively replacing S. haematobium along the Nile River in Egypt. This change has occurred in the past 15-20 years following construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s.
