Scientific models and fictional objects

Synthese, 2009
In this paper, I distinguish scientific models in three kinds on the basis of their ontological status—material models, mathematical models and fictional models, and develop and defend an account of fictional models as fictional objects—i.e. abstract objects that stand for possible concrete objects.

Scientific Models

Philosophy Compass, 2011
Abstract This contribution provides an assessment of the epistemological role of scientific models. The prevalent view that all scientific models are representations of (part of) the world is rejected. This view points to a unified way of resolving epistemic issues for scientific models. The emerging consensus in philosophy of science

Scientific cycle model with delay

Scientometrics, 2001
In this paper we analyse the growth in scientific results of natural sciences in terms of infinite dynamical system theory. We use functional differential equations to model the evolution of science in its sociological aspect. Our model includes the time-to-build of fundamental notions in science (time required to understand them).

Scientific Model (Modeling)

2014
According to Johnson and Lesh (2003, p. 274), a model must consist of “elements, relations, operations, and rules governing interactions …” For instance, scientists interested in studying water flow in a river might produce a scaled-down version of the river in the laboratory based on the length and width of the river including the same kind of rock ...

Hierarchical annealing for scientific models

2004 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2004
The computational complexity of simulated annealing makes it an impractical tool in many applications, particularly for complex, non-local models on very large 2D and 3D domains as desired in many scientific contexts. In particular, it is very difficult to produce large scale structure from a fine, pixellated lattice.

The Biopsychosocial Model and Scientific Deception

Ethical Human Psychology and Psychiatry, 2023
Mainstream psychiatry is unable to decide on its model of mental disorder. While the great bulk of research is biologically oriented, many practitioners prefer a more holistic model integrating biological, psychological, and social factors. The “biopsychosocial model” attributed to George Engel appears to offer theoretical support, but the evidence is ...

Scientific Models and Their Application in Psychiatric Models

Archives of General Psychiatry, 1966
THE PURPOSE of this paper is to present three basic scientific models and their utilization in psychiatry. Model is meant to convey the idea of summary or miniature representation of a scientific system or school of thought. Hopefully, our final model will be general enough to contain any phenomenon that might be encountered in psychiatry, not just one

Modeling and Implementing Scientific Hypothesis

Journal of Database Management, 2015
Computational Simulations are important tools that enable scientists to study complex phenomena about which few data is available or that require dangerous human interventions. They involve complex and heterogeneous components, including: mathematical equations, hypothesis, computational models and data.

Predictive models of scientific progress

Information Storage and Retrieval, 1971
Abstract Progress in science is essentially determined by the stimulating effects of information accumulation and transfer. Hence dynamic characteristics of information flow together with the structural properties of the flow network in the society should be indicative of the major thrusts of science progress as well as of its rate of development ...
