Quantitative structural organization of the sclera in chicks after deprivation myopia measured with second harmonic generation microscopy [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
Visual deprivation causes enhanced eye growth and the development of myopia, which is associated with a change in the arrangement of collagen fibers within the sclera.

Corneal Dellen and Scleral Melt Induced following Phacoemulsification Surgery and Bare Sclera Pterygium Excision: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Scientific Research in Dental and Medical Sciences, 2023
Scleral thinning and delayed conjunctival regeneration can be found after bare sclera pterygium excision. A 63-year-old male was admitted at our department for a left eye cataract and grade II nasal pterygium in the same sitting.

Sclera and Iris Color Interact to Influence Gaze Perception

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2021
The white sclera is important in facilitating gaze perception in humans. Iris color may likewise influence gaze perception but no previous studies have directly assessed its effect.

Measurement of the Elastic Modulus of Cornea, Sclera and Limbus: The Importance of the Corneal-Limbus-Scleral Biomechanical Unit

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioscience-Scholar, 2022
Background: Energy storage, transmission and dissipation are important considerations of normal mechanical homeostasis. In this paper we present a new technique termed vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT) to study the anterior anatomic ...

Mechanical Strain Regulates Myofibroblast Differentiation of Human Scleral Fibroblasts by YAP

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2021
Scleral extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. Mechanical strain induced by elevated intraocular pressure can promote myofibroblast differentiation of fibroblasts and result in scleral ...

Idiopathic Dural Optic Nerve Sheath Calcification Associated with Sclerochoroidal Calcification: Case Report and Review of Literatures

open access: yesCase Reports in Ophthalmology, 2021
We present a patient with idiopathic intracranial calcifications with simultaneous involvement of sclera, choroid, optic nerve, and trochlear apparatus. A 70-year-old woman with bilateral decreased vision was referred to our hospital. Ocular examinations

The elusive scleral cartilages: Comparative anatomy and development in teleosts and avians

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract The sclera of all vertebrate eyes is comprised of connective tissue, with some organisms developing cartilage within this tissue. A review of the cartilages that have been described in the vertebrate sclera and their anatomical relationships is discussed together with their potential homology.

PAF‐induced inflammatory and immuno‐allergic ophthalmic diseases and their mitigation with PAF receptor antagonists: Cell and nuclear effects

open access: yesBioFactors, Volume 48, Issue 6, Page 1226-1249, November/December 2022., 2022
Abstract Ocular allergies are becoming more prevalent as more airborne pollutants, irritants and microbes pervade our environment. Inflammatory and allergic mediators released by dendritic and mast cells within the conjunctiva cause allergic conjunctivitis (AC), a prevalent ocular surface disorder that affects >40% of the world's human population on a ...

Evaluating the effectiveness of physical exercise in improving standardized testing performances through attention indices

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 12, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Graphical Abstract Paired‐samples t‐tests showed that after exercise, subjects displayed increased reading speed and fewer eye drifts, coupled with increased mean scores. This study demonstrated that running, an acute, coordinative, aerobic exercise, improves attention and increases the testing performance of the SAT reading.
