Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune connective tissue disorder characterized by endothelial cell injury, vascular hyper-reactivity, obliterative microvasculopathy and excess collagen deposition, particularly within the dermis of the skin. Table 1 outlines the various terms that are used to describe the extent and location of sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc), also known as scleroderma, is a disease that can affect many tissue and organ systems. Contrary to expectations, SSc can also frequently affect the kidneys. Most renal involvements are in the form of asymptomatic proteinuria and elevated creatinine levels.

Cocaine-Induced Scleroderma and Scleroderma Renal Crisis
Southern Medical Journal, 1998Scleroderma renal crisis is a clinical syndrome of systemic sclerosis that is classically characterized by accelerated hypertension, rapidly progressive renal failure, and hyperreninemia. It has been reported that cocaine may initiate scleroderma in an already susceptible individual or unmask it at an earlier age in subclinical disease.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem disease whose clinical manifestations result from inflammation, vascular injury and obliteration, and cutaneous and visceral fibrosis. Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) occurs in 5% of patients with particullary diffuse form of SSc.

Management of scleroderma renal crisis
Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 2019Purpose of review Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) is a life-threatening manifestation in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and is usually presented by an acute onset of severe hypertension together with an acute kidney injury. We can conceptualize SRC as a systemic syndrome with features that extend beyond the involvement of the kidney ...

Scleroderma renal crisis sine scleroderma during pregnancy
Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, 2003Renal crisis is a serious complication of systemic sclerosis. Its occurrence prior to the development of skin sclerosis is exceedingly rare. We report a patient who developed acute renal failure during pregnancy. Renal biopsy showed features compatible with scleroderma renal crisis but typical cutaneous changes were only evident 2 months after the ...

Scleroderma Renal Crisis Is Still a Life-Threatening Syndrome

Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) occurs in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and is defined by otherwise unexplained rapidly progressive renal insufficiency associated with oliguria or rapidly progressive arterial hypertension or both. SRC is a rare and severe complication of SSc, most often encountered during the first 4 years of disease, almost ...

[Renal crisis in scleroderma].
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, 1993A case is described of a 30-year-old woman with scleroderma renal crisis. She presented with classical symptoms: malignant hypertension of sudden onset and rapidly progressive renal failure. End-stage renal failure developed in spite of treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors and the patient became dialysis-dependent.
