Full-$f$ gyrokinetic simulation of turbulence in a helical open-field-line plasma

open access: yes, 2018
Curvature-driven turbulence in a helical open-field-line plasma is investigated using electrostatic five-dimensional gyrokinetic continuum simulations in an all-bad-curvature helical-slab geometry.

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.

How turbulence spreading improves power handling in quiescent high confinement fusion plasmas

open access: yesCommunications Physics
Viable magnetic fusion devices necessitate combining good confinement with effective power flux handling. A major concern for ITER, and devices beyond, is the divertor heat load width, which sets peak boundary heat loads on the plasma-facing materials ...

Gas puff imaging of plasma turbulence in the magnetic island scrape-off layer of W7-X

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy
The turbulence characteristics of the scrape-off-layer (SOL) plasma in the W7-X stellarator are investigated using a gas-puff-imaging (GPI) diagnostic, newly installed and operated during the OP 2.1 campaign.

Electromagnetic ELM and inter-ELM filaments detected in the COMPASS Scrape-Off Layer

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2017
In fusion devices strong interest is deserved to the edge filament transport both related to turbulent and ELMy structures, because they are believed to provide important interaction with the plasma facing components and divertor plates.

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Interaction of Ladle Slag With Varying SiO2 Content and Recyclate‐Based MgO–C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ladle slags (CaO/Al2O3 = 1) with 1–20 wt% SiO2 were investigated in contact with industrial MgO–C refractories fabricated from fresh magnesia and 50 wt% recyclate. The sessile drop method at 1600°C reveals intensive gas formation, delayed slag infiltration in recyclate‐based samples, and, under high‐SiO2 slag, formation of a dense MgAl2O4‐rich ...
