Clinical Effect and Cost-Effectiveness of Screening for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis: A Markov Model

open access: yes, 2018
Objectives:   Screening for asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (ACAS) is controversial. The cost-effectiveness of screening depends on screening cost, ACAS prevalence, and the potential stroke reducing effect of best medical treatment (BMT). The aim of

The efficiency of screening for carriers of severe thalassemia in three community hospitals in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, Thailand

open access: yesJournal of Health Science and Medical Research (JHSMR), 2009
Screening methods for thalassemia carriers which have been widely used in Thailand include the Osmotic Fragility Test (OFT) and Dichlorophenol-indophenol precipitation test (DCIP).

Septin 9 PB domains coordinate centrosome positioning and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Septin 9 polybasic domains couple phosphoinositide‐rich membrane binding to centrosome positioning, Golgi organization, and microtubule acetylation to control epithelial polarity. Their loss disrupts this axis, causing centrosome mispositioning, Golgi fragmentation, reduced microtubule acetylation, and polarity inversion via upregulation of the ...

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Optimal timing of a colonoscopy screening schedule depends on adenoma detection, adenoma risk, adherence to screening and the screening objective: A microsimulation study. [PDF]

open access: yes
Colonoscopy-based screening provides protection against colorectal cancer (CRC), but the optimal starting age and time intervals of screening colonoscopies are unknown.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

High-throughput multiplexed T-cell-receptor excision circle quantitative PCR assay with internal controls for detection of severe combined immunodeficiency in population-based newborn screening

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) targeting a specific marker of functional T cells, the T-cell-receptor excision circle (TREC), detects the absence of functional T cells and has a demonstrated clinical validity for detecting severe combined ...
