Mechanochemical‐Induced Swelling–Activation of a Gastric‐Deployable 4D‐Printed Polypill Inspired by Natural Hygromorphic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 4, April 2025.
Lifelong medication in patients with chronic diseases compromises treatment adherence, therapeutic outcomes, and quality of life. The bioinspired 4D‐printed polypill self‐deploys upon ingestion, constricting passage through the pylorus while at the same time providing sustained drug release, serving as drug delivery platform with applications in both ...

Selective Segregation of Thermo‐Responsive Microgels via Microfluidic Technology

open access: yesSmall Methods, Volume 8, Issue 12, December 19, 2024.
A simple separation method for thermo‐responsive equally sized particles only by slight differences in their surface morphology (e.g. material, particle charge) is reported. It relies on combining the drift by pressure‐driven shear flow and thermo‐induced size difference between two different particle types.

Toward Analysis at the Point of Need: A Digital Microfluidic Approach to Processing Multi‐Source Sexual Assault Samples

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 41, November 6, 2024.
An automated, potentially portable Differential Digestion technique is developed using digital microfluidics. The new method proved compatible with Rapid DNA analysis, resulting in high‐quality STR profiles that can be used to identify the male profile in vaginal swab samples collected after coitus.

Wildfire, extreme precipitation and debris flows, oh my! Channel response to compounding disturbances in a mountain stream in the Upper Colorado Basin, USA

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 49, Issue 12, Page 3855-3872, 30 September 2024.
Repeat field surveys and lidar differencing reveal space‐ and time‐varying channel changes following several large post‐fire debris flows in a steep mountain stream in the western United States. Factors influencing local channel response included channel and valley width, unit stream power, large woody debris and snowmelt discharge.

An Integrated Optogenetic and Bioelectronic Platform for Regulating Cardiomyocyte Function

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 36, September 25, 2024.
This study reports an integrated platform for simultaneous modulation and monitoring of cardiomyocyte function in vitro. Optical inputs are achieved through expression of a photoactivatable adenylyl cyclase, that when irradiated causes a reversible increase in beating rate.

Microfluidic Platforms to Screen Granular Hydrogel Microenvironments for Tissue Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 34, Issue 32, August 8, 2024.
Despite the current interest in granular hydrogels, only few tailored in vitro platforms exist to assess interactions between cells and granular materials for tissue healing applications. In this study, microfluidic platforms are developed for the confinement of microgels‐based granular hydrogels and use them to study cell invasion from neighboring ...
