A model of scuffing phenomenon in lubricated contacts is presented in terms of a random process. The model identifies conditions that produce boundary or mixed lubrication with asperity contacts for which the plasticity index is greater than 0.6. Visual Observation of the Process of Scuffing

A visual study has been made of the process of scuffing between a lubricated steel ball and a sapphire flat. This has shown that the onset of scuffing is always preceded by the build-up of fine particles of wear debris in the contact inlet which result in starvation and consequently scuffing.
