The expression of various genes involved in synapse development, stability and/or function was studied in developing mechanosensory neuromasts and electrosensory ampullary organs in sterlet sturgeon. Most were shared, including Slc17a8, Slc1a3 and Nrxn3, but Cbln18 was neuromast‐restricted and Tulp1 was ampullary organ‐restricted.

ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems have been in an alarming state of decline for decades. In particular, estuarine ecosystems have experienced long‐term declines in fish diversity due to factors such as habitat degradation, pollution and altered hydrology. Abstract The aquaporin genes (aqps) are widely distributed among vertebrates. In cartilaginous fish, aqp3 and aqp10 are duplicated, whereas many species have lost aqp8.
