Myocardial trabeculation in embryos of Scyliorhinus canicula (Elasmobranchii, Chondrichthyans)

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, 2018
Currently, three types of ventricular myoarchitecture are recognized in vertebrates, namely compact, spongy (trabeculated) and mixed myocardium. Mixed myocardium, which has been recently proposed as the primitive condition in gnathostomes, is composed of two myocardial layers: an inner trabeculated and an outer compact one.

Individual Variation in Philopatry Is Unrelated to Activity and Space Use in the Undulate Skate Raja undulata

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
Consistent individual variation in fine‐scale movement traits is unrelated to movements occurring at larger spatio‐temporal scales in undulate skates (Raja undulata). ABSTRACT Individual variation in behavior is widespread in animals. Movement traits, which describe how individuals interact with their environment, can vary across a range of spatial and

Identification of Species Composition in the Hong Kong Shark Fin Trade using Genetic Techniques and Trader Records [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Trade in shark fins represents one of the most serious threats to shark populations worldwide. Previous studies have indicated that certain types of fins are more valued than others, but due to the largely unregulated and often covert nature of the trade,

Controlled Ghost Fishing: Effects of Soaking Times and Mesh Sizes on Catchability in Trammel Net Fisheries

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 6, Page 405-417, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Trammel nets are used with extended soaking times to increase the catching efficiency for demersal fish in commercial fishing. Long soaking time causes deterioration or damage to species caught in the first days. Effects of soaking time were investigated with 36‐mm, 42‐mm, and 46‐mm mesh sizes soaked over 1, 3, 5, and 7 days on target, non ...

Early life sensory ability—ventilatory responses of thornback ray embryos (Raja clavata) to predator-type electric fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Predator avoidance is fundamental for survival and it can be particularly challenging for prey animals if physical movement away from a predatory threat is restricted. Many sharks and rays begin life within an egg capsule that is attached to the sea bed.

Artificial Structures as Shark Egg‐Laying Substrate in a Previously Fished Mediterranean Demersal No‐Take MPA

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 11, November 2025.
ABSTRACT The location of shark egg nursery areas in the Mediterranean Sea is not well known. Moreover, decades of trawling have depleted flat muddy bottoms of both organic (sessile colonial organisms) and inorganic (rocks) three‐dimensional structures in the western Mediterranean Sea.

From Data Deficient to Big Data in Shark Conservation

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 26, Issue 6, Page 977-990, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Citizen science is increasingly harnessed worldwide to gather data otherwise requiring a prohibitive investment of funding and time. Meanwhile, the revolution in digital communication offers opportunities from crowdsourcing, big data approaches and social network mining to quickly and cost‐effectively fill major gaps in knowledge necessary to ...

Feeding ecology of five commercial shark species of the Celtic Sea through stable isotope and trace metal analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In order to trace their feeding habits, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (delta(15)N and delta(13)C), as well as trace metal concentrations (Zn, Cd, Fe, Cu, Se and Hg) were analysed in the tissues of five commercial shark species from the Celtic
