Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Disruption of a cystine transporter downregulates expression of genes involved in sulfur regulation and cellular respiration

open access: yesBiology Open, 2016
Cystine and cysteine are important molecules for pathways such as redox signaling and regulation, and thus identifying cellular deficits upon deletion of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae cystine transporter Ers1p allows for a further understanding of cystine

Analysis of Receptor’s Distribution in Entorhinal Cortex after Induction of Spreading Depression in Juvenile Rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Spreading depression (SD), discovered by Leao in 1944, is a pathophysiological wave which propagates slowly in the brain (3 mm/min) and cause dramatic ionic and hemodynamic changes.

Waveguide-QED-based measurement of a reservoir spectral density

open access: yes, 2015
The spectral density (SD) function has a central role in the study of open quantum systems (OQSs). We discover a method allowing for a "static" measurement of the SD - i.e., it requires neither the OQS to be initially excited nor its time evolution ...

Publication rates on the topic of racial and ethnic diversity in dermatology versus other specialties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Background: The population of the U.S. is becoming more diverse every year. The field of dermatology is not following the same trend. Objective: To assess the promotion of diversity in the field of dermatology by analyzing publications focused on ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Social cases? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study of in-patients over the age of 60 years at St. Luke's hospital who were deemed to be social cases (SC). The majority (58.4%) were female and the mean age was 80 years (range 60-92, SD: 6.7 years).
