What Do Large Language Models Know About Materials?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
If large language models (LLMs) are to be used inside the material discovery and engineering process, they must be benchmarked for the accurateness of intrinsic material knowledge. The current work introduces 1) a reasoning process through the processing–structure–property–performance chain and 2) a tool for benchmarking knowledge of LLMs concerning ...

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

Interaction of geophysical flows with sea ice dynamics

open access: yesNonlinear Differential Equations and Applications NoDEA
Abstract This article establishes local strong well-posedness and global strong well-posedness close to constant equilibria of a model coupling the primitive equations of ocean and atmosphere dynamics with Hibler’s viscous-plastic sea ice model.

Barents Sea ice cover reflects Atlantic inflow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The recent Arctic winter sea-ice retreat is most pronounced in the Barents Sea. Using available observations of the Atlantic inflow to the Barents Sea and results from a regional ice-ocean model we assess the role of inflowing heat anomalies on sea-ice ...

Morphology, Transport, and Dynamics of Protein Adsorption in Open‐Cell Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stainless steel (SS) open‐cell foams are shown to adsorb more protein per unit area than previously reported 316L SS and chromium oxide surfaces under static and flow conditions. An integrated approach combining 3D pore imaging, flow simulation, and protein adsorption experiments characterizes the foam’s performance.

Rotary 3D Printing With Integrated Electroplating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A rotary material extrusion platform integrates localized copper electroplating with printing and encapsulation to fabricate cylindrical polymer–metal structures containing fully embedded, low‐resistance conductive pathways that enable internal Joule heating and thermally activated shape‐memory responses.

Enhancing Low‐Temperature Performance of Sodium‐Ion Batteries via Anion‐Solvent Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DOL is introduced into electrolytes as a co‐solvent, increasing slat solubility, ion conductivity, and the de‐solvent process, and forming an anion‐rich solvent shell due to its high interaction with anion. With the above virtues, the batteries using this electrolyte exhibit excellent cycling stability at low temperatures. Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries

Assessing Arctic marginal ice zone dynamics from 1979 to 2023: insights into long-term variability and morphological changes

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters
Against the backdrop of global climate change, the continued decline in Arctic sea ice extent and thickness has intensified the dynamic evolution of the marginal ice zone (MIZ).

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.
