Nitrogen dynamics in a marginal sea-ice zone

Continental Shelf Research, 1987
Abstract Intense blooms of phytoplankton develop at the edge of the seasonal sea ice in the southeastern Bering Sea in spring. These blooms are closely associated with extremely strong water column density stratification due to ice melt. Here we examine the nitrogen requirements of the phytoplankton and evaluate the importance of nitrogen sources to ...

Constitutive Laws for Sea Ice Dynamics Models

1997
Abstract : The long term goal of my research is to develop sea ice dynamics models that describe behavior on kilometer scales and larger, and to base these models on the smaller scale physical processes known to control leading, rafting, and ridging. Three objectives were (1) to continue development of the new anisotropic plasticity constitutive law ...

A 2-DIMENSIONAL MODEL FOR THE DYNAMICS OF SEA-ICE

Royal Society of London. Proceedings A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 1994
This paper develops a systematic analysis of a sea ice pack viewed as a thin layer of coherent ice floes and open water regions at the ocean surface. The pack is driven by wind stress and Coriolis force, with responsive water drag on the base of the floes.

Investigations of Sea Ice Dynamics in the Baltic Sea

2001
The Baltic Sea is a semi-enclosed basin in the seasonal sea ice zone. This ice dynamics problem offers its own particular regime of spatial scales below the large polar seas: the horizontal size of the basins is 100–300 km, the thickness of undeformed ice is up to 1 m, and ice ridges are typically 5–15 m thick.
