Changes in Sea Surface Roughness in Light Wind
2021Correct interpretation and application of remote sensing data from spacecraft requires detailed information about the sea surface. The structure and variability of the sea surface are analyzed under conditions that are most favorable for remote monitoring of processes occurring near the ocean–atmosphere boundary.

Comparison of Methods for Rough Sea-surface Estimation
Proceedings, 2017Marine seismic data acquired in rough sea conditions present a challenge to successful processing due to the time- and space-dependent perturbations introduced at the source and the relative timing of the ghost at the receivers. It is possible to partially correct for these perturbations via stochastic treatments based on an assumed sea-state, but a ...

On the Dependence of Sea Surface Roughness on Wave Development
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1993Abstract The aerodynamic roughness of the sea surface, z0, is investigated using data from Lake Ontario, from the North Sea near the Dutch coast, and from an exposed site in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia. Scaling z0 by rms wave height gives consistent results for all three datasets, except where wave heights in the Atlantic Ocean are ...

The Simulation of Non-Gaussian Scattering on Rough Sea Surface
2018The simulation of a non-Gaussian scattering on rough surface based on local curvature approximation (NG-LCA) model is presented. The comparison between the NRCS result of LCA and the QuikSCAT scatterometer data shows that NG-LCA model can well explain the scattering way of the Upwind/downwind asymmetry.

Aerodynamic roughness of the sea surface at high winds
Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2007The role of the surface roughness in the formation of the aerodynamic friction of the water surface at high wind speeds is investigated. The study is based on a wind-over-waves coupling theory. In this theory waves provide the surface friction velocity through the form drag, while the energy input from the wind to waves depends on the friction velocity

On the action of rain in calming the sea and generating sea surface roughness
IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. IGARSS'99 (Cat. No.99CH36293), 2003It is well known among sailors that rain tends to calm long sea waves. Additionally to the wave damping process, rain produces short scale roughness which becomes visible especially in low wind situations. The variation of sea surface roughness due to rain influences radar backscattering.

Rough sea surface implications on receiver deghosting
First Break, 2017Efficient removal of ghost events is the key to achieving broadband seismic data. On the receiver-side, accurate ghost removal can be performed when both pressure and vertical particle velocity information is available. However, deghosting pressure-only measurements by spectral division with a flat sea surface or a statistical ghost function is still ...

The RCS computation of targets on the rough sea surface
2007 International Conference on Microwave and Millimeter Wave Technology, 2007The physical optic algorithm is applied in the simple and fast calculation of the RCS of the target over the sea surface with different wind speeds. The rough sea surface with different wind speeds is described by a simple empirical formula. The "fourth-path model" is invoked in a first-order approximation of the half-space contribution to the ...

An experimental setup for autonomous operation of surface vessels in rough seas
Robotica, 2013SUMMARYA small-scale experimental setup for autonomous target tracking of a surface vessel in the presence of obstacles is presented. The experiments are performed in simulated rough seas through wave, current, and wind generation in a small indoor pool.

Propagation over the rough sea surface
2000For parabolic equation modelling of forward scatter over a rough surface, we are concerned with the average field, corresponding to specular reflection. Most applications involve a non-homogeneous propagation medium, a situation which is extremely difficult to treat.
