Broadening the semiaquatic scene: Quantification of long bone microanatomy across pinnipeds

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Investigations of bone microanatomy are commonly used to explore lifestyle strategies in vertebrates. While distinct microanatomical limb bone features have been established for exclusively aquatic and terrestrial lifestyles, identifying clear patterns for the semiaquatic lifestyle remains more challenging.

Seahorse Acoustic Reflection on Active and Passive Moving Condition : A Prelyminary Observation in Watertank

open access: yesOmni-Akuatika, 2018
Identification and estimation of seahorse population in the marine environment are difficult to obtain. Nowadays, the observations use visual techniques, biologic and statistics.

Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

Effects of photoperiod on growth of larvae and juveniles of the anemonefish Amphiprion melanopus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Rearing of anemonefishes is now relatively routine compared to the culture of cardinalfishes (Apogonidae) or angelfishes (Pomacanthidae). However, it is still a labor intensive, time intensive and expensive procedure.

TWEAK/Fn14 Signaling Drives Oxidative Cardiac Injury in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Evidence From Patient Biomarker Studies, Lupus Mouse Models, and Cardiomyocyte Assays

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, EarlyView.
Objective Cardiac involvement is a major cause of morbidity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Tumor necrosis factor–like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK) is elevated in SLE, but its contribution to lupus‐associated cardiac injury is unclear. We investigated the role of TWEAK/fibroblast growth factor–inducible 14 (Fn14) signaling in SLE‐related ...

Sustainability of Seahorses: Lessons Learned of Local Wisdom from Bintan Islands, Riau Islands Province

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2018
Seahorse (Hippocampus spp.) has a high economic value in Bintan Island that leads to its exploitation by coastal community intensively. This study was to assess local knowledge on seahorse ecology which was captured across shoreline near the coastal ...

Clock genes regulate Ca2+ signaling and mitochondrial bioenergetics to inhibit Sjogren's disease

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Objective Although Ca2+ signaling and metabolism have been identified as key determinants for the development of Sjogren's disease (SjD), the intricate connection between them and salivary gland physiology remains poorly understood. Methods Fluorescence‐based Ca2+ imaging, RNA seq, and mitochondrial activity were used to investigate the effects of ...

Reading hominin life history in fossil bones and teeth: methods to test hypotheses regarding its evolution

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Human life history is derived compared to that of our closest living relatives, the great apes. It has been suggested that these derived traits are causally related to aspects of our ecology, social behaviour and cognitive abilities. However, resolving this requires that we know the evolutionary trajectory of our distinctive pattern of growth,

Glucose Metabolism as a Potential Therapeutic Target in Cytarabine-Resistant Acute Myeloid Leukemia

open access: yesPharmaceutics
Altered glycolytic metabolism has been associated with chemoresistance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, there are still aspects that need clarification, as well as how to explore these metabolic alterations in therapy.
