Search radar for civil aircraft

Journal of the British Institution of Radio Engineers, 1952
The possible functions of airborne radar are briefly reviewed. Consideration of the basic design problems of a system intended primarily for (1) Detection of cumulo-nimbus clouds, (2) High ground avoidance, and (3) Map painting, indicates that a power of 10 kW at 3 cm with a 6-deg beam width is adequate.

Adaptive search strategy in phased array radars

2001 CIE International Conference on Radar Proceedings (Cat No.01TH8559), 2002
In this paper, an adaptive region search strategy and its performance are studied. Firstly, the optimal illumination interval and the optimal search performance with the known target appearance probability are derived. Next, the influence of the target distribution density's estimation error on the optimal region search performance is analyzed and an ...

Radar Search Antennas and RFI

IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 1964
The susceptibility of radar search antennas to radio-frequency interference (RFI) is determined to a great extent by the minor lobe structure. The use of detailed, three-dimensional patterns to predict RFI is not practical because the fine structure of the antenna pattern changes with frequency, range in the Fresnel zone, and site effects.

HRR profiling in GMTI search radar

Record of the IEEE 2000 International Radar Conference [Cat. No. 00CH37037], 2002
This paper presents a high range resolution (HRR) profiling technique for generating range and Doppler profiles of multiple moving targets, while the radar is in ground moving target indicator (GMTI) search mode. To implement such a technique, it requires no a priori information on target velocity and/or phase, hence, it is a good candidate to be ...

Continuous Drift Angle from a Search Radar

IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Navigational Electronics, 1963
Noncoherent Doppler permits determination of the ground course as the azimuth of a null in the clutter Doppler returns and, therefore, can be a frequency insensitive adjunct to a pilotage search radar, especially where weight and/or power is at a premium.

Synthetic aperture radar and search and rescue

IGARSS 2000. IEEE 2000 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. Taking the Pulse of the Planet: The Role of Remote Sensing in Managing the Environment. Proceedings (Cat. No.00CH37120), 2002
Scientists at the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing have explored the uses of remotely sensed imagery to assist search and rescue in Canada. Studies concentrated on the uses of SAR imagery for the detection and classification of crashed aircraft and have shown the feasibility of using such imagery for these purposes, although current spaceborne systems ...

Modified Hough Transform for Searching Radar Detection

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2008
In this letter, we propose a modified Hough transform (HT) algorithm for radar detection by shifting the parameter space cells as well as exploiting the phase information of signal. The proposed modified HT brings (1) significant improvement of radar target detection at low signal-to-noise ratios and (2) complexity reduction of HT implementation in ...

Signal processor retrofit for air search radar

1992 IEEE Aerospace Applications Conference Digest, 1992
An approach for improving the performance of existing air search radars by retrofitting the signal processor while leaving the RF hardware and digital data processor (DDP) essentially unchanged is proposed. By using improved algorithms and computational accuracy, the 1.7-dB reduction in processing losses described by C.S. Miller et al.

A synthetic aperture radar mode for the AN/APS-506 maritime search radar

Proceedings of the 1988 IEEE National Radar Conference, 2003
The modifications and additions that were necessary to incorporate spotlight and strip-map synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) modes into the AN/APS-506 radar are described. The changes include enhancing the radar's coherence and adding software for SAR control. A motion-compensation subsystem and data-recording facility were also developed.

Search and Rescue: Surveillance support from RPAs radar

2017 European Navigation Conference (ENC), 2017
The migratory flow across the Mediterranean sea has lost its “emergency” nature and has become more than ever an everyday reality. There is an evident need to strengthen the control at the European external borders and in particular in the Mediterranean sea, where the surveillance system must also support Search and Rescue (SaR) operations.
