After exit: Academic achievement patterns of former English language learners.

open access: yesEducation Policy Analysis Archives, 2004
With few exceptions, accountability systems for programs for English language learners (ELLs) have focused on the achievement patterns of ELLs who are still considered “limited English proficient” and program evaluations have been unable to answer the ...

Heterotropic regulation and negative homotropic cooperativity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We identified a structural module common to some proteins that couple negative cooperativity with heterotropic regulation, two features that rarely coexist. These proteins are ring‐like and present an ordered asymmetry whereby noncontacting subunits are symmetric, and their tertiary structure differs from that of contacting subunits.

Cell surface CD11c as a neutrophil aging marker molecule

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Cell surface CD11chi neutrophils were more aged and had better phagocytic function than CD11c−/lo neutrophils. Transcriptomic analysis of CD11chi neutrophils and CD11c−/lo neutrophils in pediatric population showed that the most difference was seen in infants.

Validation in Second Language Classroom Research: The Role of Observation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
The purpose of this paper is to explore more precisely how observational analyses of classroom interaction can be validated, and further, how the validation of claims about instructional variables (such as the effectiveness of programs, teaching methods,

The C‐terminal truncated splicing variant of NK1R negatively modulates substance P‐stimulated NK1R signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The neurokinin 1 receptor exists as full‐length (NK1L) and C‐terminally truncated (NK1S) splice variants. We show that NK1S heterodimerizes with NK1L, impairing Gαq coupling and Ca2+ mobilization while enhancing β‐arrestin1 recruitment. NK1S suppresses substance P‐driven gene expression and cell migration, revealing NK1S as an endogenous biased ...

The language socialization paradigm for SLA: What's in it for you? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Watson-Gegeo (2001) tells us that we are “at the beginning of a paradigm shift in the human and social sciences” that is “fundamentally transforming second language acquisition (SLA) and educational theory and research” (p. 1).

Evaluating GenAI‐produced feedback on undergraduate bioscience essays against good higher education feedback practice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This pilot study investigates the potential of Generative AI to provide formative feedback to students. ChatGPT was prompted to provide feedback on Year 1 Bioscience essays, which were evaluated against established good feedback practices. GenAI‐authored feedback had useful elements, but was limited in scope. GenAI may have potential to provide instant,

Self‐Regulated Learning Meets AI: Reinterpreting Self‐Regulation, Co‐Regulation, and Socially Shared Regulation in Human–AI Interaction

open access: yesNew Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Advancing artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed learning and work, yet higher education and professional development programs have not systematically equipped learners for AI‐prevalent environments. This lack of preparation creates uncertainty regarding control, responsibility, trust, and accountability.
