Mussel‐Inspired Molecular Strategies for Fabricating Functional Materials With Underwater Adhesion and Self‐Healing Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review systematically examines the nanomechanical mechanisms of mussel‐inspired molecular interactions, primarily investigated by direct force measurement techniques such as surface forces apparatus and atomic force microscopy. The macroscopic adhesive and self‐healing performances of mussel‐inspired functional materials, including coacervates ...

Colossal Cryogenic Electro‐Optic Response Through Metastability in Strained BaTiO3 Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Utilizing the thermodynamic theory of optical properties, a colossal cryogenic electro‐optic response in BaTiO3 thin films is designed and demonstrated by stabilizing a low symmetry metastable monoclinic phase via epitaxial strain tuning with an electro‐optic response reaching ≈2516 pm V−1 at 5 K. This approach represents a new paradigm for engineering

On the Second Law of Thermodynamics in Continuum Physics

open access: yesThermo
The paper revisits the formulation of the second law in continuum physics and investigates new methods of exploitation. Both the entropy flux and the entropy production are taken to be expressed by constitutive equations.

Elastic Energy Storage in Biological Materials: Internal Stresses and Their Functionality

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Harnessing and storing internally generated elastic energy is a clever strategy by biological materials to perform functions like shape transformation, movement, and predation. This review explores how biological systems manipulate mechanisms like atomic or protein integration into minerals, protein conformational shifts, phase transitions, and osmotic

Microstructural Evolution Dynamics in Rapid Joule Heating Densification of High‐Nickel Cathodes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Introduction of high‐temperature rapid Joule heating combined with two‐step sintering drives full densification while suppressing grain coarsening in high‐Ni cathodes. By activating lattice and grain boundary diffusion over surface diffusion, this approach achieves dense microstructures without excessive grain growth, offering insights into the ...

Photothermal Boost of Laser‐Synthesized TiC Colloidal Variants with Engineered Solid‐State Interfaces and Nitridation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
TiC Colloidal variants are synthesized via a green and waste‐free laser fragmentation technique. The surface and elemental composition of the TiC colloids are tuned through laser‐induced carbon nucleation and nitridation while maintaining their crystal integrity. These changes maximize light–colloid interactions, thereby improving photo thermalization.
