Representation of Scientific Methodology in Secondary Science Textbooks

Science & Education, 2015
This study explored how eight widely used secondary science textbooks described scientific methodology and to what degree the textbooks’ examples and investigations were consistent with this description. Data consisted of all text from student and teacher editions that referred to scientific methodology and all investigations.

Secondary representation stability and the once-punctured torus

Topology and its Applications, 2022
The author studies the ordered configuration spaces of \(n\) points on the punctured torus, with focus on the stability phenomenon. Let \(X\) be a non-compact manifold of dimension \(d\), the operation of adding a point ``near infinity'' induces a map in homology \[ H_k(F_n(X)) \to H_k(F_{n+1}(X)) \] that stabilizes for \(n \geq 2k\) as representation ...

Building spatial representations through primary and secondary learning.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1984
The current study examined the conditions under which cognitive representations of spatial information are stored in orientation-specific ways (like pictures) versus orientation-free ways. College students learned simple paths by viewing a map of them (map condition), by walking them while blindfolded (walk condition), or by directly viewing the route ...

Secondary Students' Subject Matter Representations of Climate Change

Journal of Geoscience Education, 2008
Nine 11th and 12th grade students from a large urban high school participated in a three-tiered program that charged them with the responsibility to be earth science mentors for 7th graders from a local feeder school. During Tier I, a three-month training period, these 11th and 12th graders worked closely with university-based scientists, science ...

Pseudoknots in RNA Secondary Structures: Representation, Enumeration, and Prevalence

Journal of Computational Biology, 2006
A number of non-coding RNA are known to contain functionally important or conserved pseudoknots. However, pseudoknotted structures are more complex than orthodox, and most methods for analyzing secondary structures do not handle them. I present here a way to decompose and represent general secondary structures which extends the tree representation of ...

Secondary predication and the lexical representation of verbs

Machine Translation, 1990
In this paper it is assumed that syntactic structure is projected from the lexicon. The lexical representation, which encodes the linguistically relevant aspects of the meanings of words, thus determines and constrains the syntax. Therefore, if semantic analysis of syntactic structures is to be possible, it is necessary to determine the content and ...

Teaching and Learning Representations in Upper Secondary Physics

2017
This study aimed at developing teaching material and strategies emphasising representations and modelling in upper secondary physics teaching. Representations are tools for modelling and understanding representations and how these can be manipulated is therefore believed to be a prerequisite for developing modelling skills.

Program Transferability - Data Access Representation for Secondary Storage

1972
Abstract : This report presents theoretical work which should lead fairly directly to analytical tools which can materially reduce the coat of transferring programs from one computer system to another. A unified, general description of data files and data access methods, called the data access representation, is developed which, it is asserted, is ...
