Seed size, shape and vertical distribution in the soil: indicators of seed longevity

Functional Ecology, 1998
1. We investigated the vertical distribution of seeds in the soil, using data from nine studies in five European countries. We discovered significant correlations between seed shape and distribution in the soil. 2. The classification of the longevity of seeds of plant species has been improved by the introduction of a ‘longevity index’, expressing on ...

Shape Control Beyond the Seeds in Gold Nanoparticles

Chemistry of Materials, 2021
In typical seed-mediated syntheses of metal nanocrystals, the shape of the nanocrystal is determined largely by the seed nucleation environment and subsequent growth environment (where “environment...

Parental memories shape seeds

Trends in Plant Science, 2009
It is ten years since imprinting was first demonstrated in Arabidopsis, following the realization, five years earlier, that some genetic controls of seed development did not conform to Mendelian inheritance. Sixteen imprinted genes have since been identified in maize and Arabidopsis and these are expressed primarily in the endosperm, which nurtures ...

Heritability of Seed Shape and Seed Size in Soybean

Crop Science, 1997
Round seeds are desirable for food‐type soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars and an understanding of the heritability of seed shape would benefit the development of these cultivars. The objectives of this study were to estimate heritability of seed shape and seed size by parent‐offspring regression, parent‐offspring correlation, and realized ...

Reconfigurable dynamic beam shaping in seeded frequency doubling

Optics Letters, 2001
A new method that allows simultaneous frequency doubling and dynamic shaping of a Gaussian beam into a variety of light patterns is introduced. The novel technique is based on the controllable generation of multiple-vortex patterns in seeded schemes. Applications include the generation of dynamic patterns of frequency-doubled, coherent optical tweezers.

Cold Hardiness and Seed Shape in Maize

Nature, 1949
AT least one mid-Western seed company has asserted that 'round-grade' dent corn (maize) seeds withstand more than 'flat-grade' seeds the cold weather after early spring sowings.

Bacterial seed endophyte shapes disease resistance in rice

Nature Plants, 2021
Cereal crop production is severely affected by seed-borne bacterial diseases across the world. Locally occurring disease resistance in various crops remains elusive. Here, we have observed that rice plants of the same cultivar can be differentiated into disease-resistant and susceptible phenotypes under the same pathogen pressure.

Variation and Evaluation of Seed Shape in Soybean

Crop Science, 1989
Differences in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed shape are obvious but no measure of that variability has been published. The objectives of this research were to determine the consistency of seed shape and to establish and test a visual classification scheme for soybean seed shape. Such a scheme could exploit the variability of this trait to assist
