Understanding and measuring mechanical signals in the tumor stroma

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This review discusses cancer‐associated fibroblast subtypes and their functions, particularly in relation to extracellular matrix production, as well as the development of 3D models to study tumor stroma mechanics in vitro. Several quantitative techniques to measure tissue mechanical properties are also described, to emphasize the diagnostic and ...

Robust Finger Vein ROI Localization Based on Flexible Segmentation

open access: yesSensors, 2013
Finger veins have been proved to be an effective biometric for personal identification in the recent years. However, finger vein images are easily affected by influences such as image translation, orientation, scale, scattering, finger structure ...

Automatic segmentation with detection of local segmentation failures in cardiac MRI [PDF]

open access: yescurrently under press - Scientific Reports (2020), 2020
Segmentation of cardiac anatomical structures in cardiac magnetic resonance images (CMRI) is a prerequisite for automatic diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases. To increase robustness and performance of segmentation methods this study combines automatic segmentation and assessment of segmentation uncertainty in CMRI to detect image regions

Mapping Hsp104 interactions using cross‐linking mass spectrometry

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study examines how cross‐linking mass spectrometry can be utilized to analyze ATP‐induced conformational changes in Hsp104 and its interactions with substrates. We developed an analytical pipeline to distinguish between intra‐ and inter‐subunit contacts within the hexameric homo‐oligomer and discovered contacts between Hsp104 and a selected ...

White Blood Cell Segmentation by Color-Space-Based K-Means Clustering

open access: yesSensors, 2014
White blood cell (WBC) segmentation, which is important for cytometry, is a challenging issue because of the morphological diversity of WBCs and the complex and uncertain background of blood smear images.

Alkane biosynthesis gene expression and its increased production in recombinant cyanobacteria

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The transcription and mRNA structures of the alkane biosynthesis genes ado/aar were analysed in the representative cyanobacteria PCC 6803 and SK1‐2‐1, which produce C17H36 and C15H32, respectively. PCC 6803 transconjugants carrying these genes showed a 1.8‐ to 2.3‐fold increase in C17H36 production.

Quantification of Right and Left Ventricular Function in Cardiac MR Imaging: Comparison of Semiautomatic and Manual Segmentation Algorithms

open access: yesDiagnostics, 2013
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a semiautomatic segmentation method for the anatomical and functional assessment of both ventricles from cardiac cine magnetic resonance (MR) examinations, reducing user interaction to a “mouse-

Hydrophobicity causes anomalous migration of cystine/glutamate antiporter SLC7A11 in SDS‐PAGE with low acrylamide concentration

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
SLC7A11 frequently migrates faster in SDS‐PAGE. The present study found that the high hydrophobicity of SLC7A11 causes its anomalous migration in SDS‐PAGE with a low concentration of acrylamide gel. Replacing isoleucine with asparagine reduced hydrophobicity and restored its normal migration at 55 kDa, revealing the role of hydrophobicity and gel ...

ANN-based Innovative Segmentation Method for Handwritten text in Assamese [PDF]

open access: yesK. Bhattacharyya and K. K. Sarma, "ANN-based Innovative Segmentation Method for Handwritten text in Assamese", International Journal of Computer Science Issues, Volume 5, pp9-16, October 2009, 2009
Artificial Neural Network (ANN) s has widely been used for recognition of optically scanned character, which partially emulates human thinking in the domain of the Artificial Intelligence. But prior to recognition, it is necessary to segment the character from the text to sentences, words etc.
