Multidimensional Indexes of Occupational Segregation

Evaluation Review, 1997
The properties of three multidimensional measures of occupational segregation by gender and race are compared-namely, the generalizations of the Karmel and Maclachlan and Gini indexes and Goodman and Kruskal's τ b . The generalization of the Gini index is shown to be flawed.

Sampling Distributions of Segregation Indexes

Sociological Methods & Research, 2000
This article examines the sampling distributions of popular indexes of segregation: the dissimilarity index and the Gini index. Although applications of segregation indexes are common in the social sciences, researchers have usually failed to recognize their stochastic nature.

A distance-based segregation index

Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, 1981
Abstract A tool for measuring segregation in settlement patterns is introduced. This in an extension of the well-known Index of Dissimilarity. By incorporating locations of areal units into the measurement process directly, the distance-based approach substantially reduces the dependence upon size and number of data observations characteristic of the

Spatial indexes: a focus on segregation

2014
In the social sciences, it is common for summary measures – often called indexes – of different phenomena to be constructed, often drawing on detailed data sets. These indexes include consumer price and stock market indexes, income inequality and various forms of segregation, including residential, occupational and school by gender and race, and also ...

The properties of a distance-based segregation index

Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, 1982
Abstract The relationship between Jakub's recently introduced Distance-based Segregation Index and the Index of Dissimilarity is algebraically specified. The reasons why the distance-based index is substantially less dependent on the size of sub-areas are detailed, and the importance of this property is discussed.

A New Generalized “Exposure-Based” Segregation Index

Sociological Methods & Research, 1986
Interest is growing in the neighborhood segregation of Hispanics as well as blacks in U.S urban areas. This article shows how “exposure-based” or p * indexes of segregation may be generalized for analyses of the segregation of three or more groups, and demonstrates the application of the ...

Optical limiting by index-matched phase-segregated mixtures

SPIE Proceedings, 2004
The nonlinear optical response for index-matched, non-absorbing immiscible phases (liquid-solid, liquid-liquid, solid-solid) has been determined by means of open aperture z-scan measurements. In mixtures where one constituent shows a relatively high optical nonlinearity, rapid and reversible transformation to a light-scattering state is observed under ...

The Gini-Exposure Index for Measuring Segregation in Networks

Rivista italiana degli economisti, 2014
This paper studies the inequality in the distribution of social interaction profiles among individuals. An interaction profile assigns the probabilities that one individual has to interact with well defined social groups and it can be inferred, for instance, from observations of social ties through networks data.

The theoretical grain index, an index for use in the assessment of analyte segregation in powdered material

Powder Technology, 1981
Abstract Analytical results can be very unsatisfactory when a powder is analysed at the parts per million level and less. This paper shows that unreliable results can be caused by the analyte being confined to the few largest grains in the powder.
