Selenium and its Compounds

2015
Selenium exists in various chemical forms (speciation) and oxidation states that can affect its occurrence, properties, use and toxicity. Human exposures occur in the workplace, and via food and drinking water, through dermal, inhalation or ingestion routes involving organic or inorganic forms. Ingestion of the organic form from food, including dietary

Selenium Compounds and Selenoproteins in Cancer

Chemistry & Biodiversity, 2008
AbstractAn adequate selenium (Se) status has for long been considered to prevent the development of various forms of cancer. However, underlying molecular mechanisms remained unknown. In mammals, selenium exerts its functions as selenocysteine incorporated into selenoproteins.

Contributions to the chemistry of selenium and selenium compounds—V the hydrolysis of selenium

Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, 1960
Abstract The reactions of selenium with water, with alkali hydroxides and with ammonium hydroxides were investigated. The reactions of selenium with alkali hydroxides and ammonium hydroxide afford colloidal selenium solutions. The experimental evidence was supported by theoretical considerations, on the basis of redox potentials.

Gas-chromatographic determination of selenium as an organo-selenium compound with acetophenone

Talanta, 1974
A gas-chromatographic method with electron-capture detection is presented for the determination of selenium after reaction with acetophenone to obtain an organo-selenium compound. This compound is extracted into benzene and chromatographed on an alumina column. The relative standard deviation for the average value (5 mug) is +/-6% (n = 8, P = 95%). The

Dietary Aspects for Selenium and/or Selenium Compounds

2018
The essential trace element selenium is present in our diet in different forms and concentrations. An insufficiently low intake will cause a status of selenium deficiency that is associated with an increased risk for developing certain diseases including cancer, infectious, autoimmune and other diseases.

Sulphur-selenium compounds

Australian Journal of Chemistry, 1969
The characterization of various mixtures obtained by fractional recrystallization of sulphur-selenium melts is described. Optical absorption spectra of thin films, mass spectra, and X-ray diffraction data reveal two distinct ranges of homogeneity, the break occurring at 14 at. % Se.

Selenium compounds as therapeutic agents in cancer

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 2015
With cancer cells encompassing consistently higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and with an induced antioxidant defense to counteract the increased basal ROS production, tumors have a limited reserve capacity resulting in an increased vulnerability of some cancer cells to ROS.
