Toxicology of Selenium and Tellurium and Their Compounds

Archives of Environmental Health: An International Journal, 1961
A comprehensive survey of the toxicological properties of selenium and tellurium and their compounds is presented. Although selenium has been used commercially for many years with no long-term systemic effects on industrial workers, selenium has long been regarded as a toxic substance.

Mutagenic activity of selenium compounds

Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology, 1979
The mutagenicities of selenate (SeO2/4-) and selenite (SeO2/3-) were determined by two bacterial assay systems: Kada's rec-assay and Ames's Salmonella test. In both assays, these compounds were found to be weak mutagens. In the Salmonella test, selenate (0.05 revertants/nmole) and selenite (0.2 revertants/nmole) gave rise to base-pair substitution.

Methods of Selenium Supplementation: Bioavailability and Determination of Selenium Compounds

Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 2014
Selenium, a "dual-surface" element, maintains a very thin line between a level of necessity and harmfulness. Because of this, a deficiency or excess of this element in an organism is dangerous and causes health-related problems, both physically and mentally.

Contributions to the chemistry of selenium and selenium compounds—V the hydrolysis of selenium

Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, 1960
Abstract The reactions of selenium with water, with alkali hydroxides and with ammonium hydroxides were investigated. The reactions of selenium with alkali hydroxides and ammonium hydroxide afford colloidal selenium solutions. The experimental evidence was supported by theoretical considerations, on the basis of redox potentials.

FATES OF ADMINISTERED SELENIUM COMPOUNDS

Nutrition Reviews, 2009
The selenium analogues of the sulfur-containing amino acids are important tools for tracing the course of selenium from ingested food to functional proteins in the animal.

Selenium Compounds and Selenoproteins in Cancer

Chemistry & Biodiversity, 2008
AbstractAn adequate selenium (Se) status has for long been considered to prevent the development of various forms of cancer. However, underlying molecular mechanisms remained unknown. In mammals, selenium exerts its functions as selenocysteine incorporated into selenoproteins.

Sulphur-selenium compounds

Australian Journal of Chemistry, 1969
The characterization of various mixtures obtained by fractional recrystallization of sulphur-selenium melts is described. Optical absorption spectra of thin films, mass spectra, and X-ray diffraction data reveal two distinct ranges of homogeneity, the break occurring at 14 at. % Se.

Gas-chromatographic determination of selenium as an organo-selenium compound with acetophenone

Talanta, 1974
A gas-chromatographic method with electron-capture detection is presented for the determination of selenium after reaction with acetophenone to obtain an organo-selenium compound. This compound is extracted into benzene and chromatographed on an alumina column. The relative standard deviation for the average value (5 mug) is +/-6% (n = 8, P = 95%). The
