This article presents the results of a phenomenological study of the experience of self-forgiveness. On the basis of in-depth interviews with seven subjects, self-forgiveness is described not as an achievement but rather as a gift where one moves from estrangement and "brokenness" to a sense of at-homeness.

Distinguishing ‘genuine’ self-forgiveness from pseudo and punitive self-forgiveness : An examination of the variants of self-forgiveness

본 연구는 진정한 자기용서를 이해하기 위하여 진정한 자기용서를 거짓 자기용서, 처벌적 자기용서와 구분하고, 진정한 자기용서에 영향을 미치는 인지, 정서 및 행동변인과 진정한 자기용서가 행복, 정신건강 문제에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 수도권과 비수도권에 소재하고 있는 대학교의 대학생과 대학원생 641명을 대상으로 자기용서, 수치심, 죄책감, 보상행동, 불안, 우울, 분노, 행복에 관한 자료를 수집하였다. 회귀분석 결과에 의하면, 수치심이 많을수록, 죄책감과 보상행동이 적을수록, 용서 받지 못했다고 지각할수록, 거짓 자기용서 수준이 높아졌다.

This critique proposes that self-forgiveness is a misleading and inaccurate concept for understanding the conditions to which it is applied. Besides the fact that traditional religion provides no rationale for self-forgiveness, four specific criticisms are presented. (1) Self-forgiveness causes splitting of the self--creating various problems.
