Three‐dimensional meso‐scale finite element modeling of recycled aggregate concrete using cohesive zone method

open access: yesStructural Concrete, EarlyView.
Abstract The presence of adhered mortar (AM) in recycled aggregates (RAs) significantly affects the mechanical performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Meso‐scale modeling provides valuable insights into complex phase interactions, enabling a better understanding of RAC behavior.

The Greatest Show (Birds) on Earth: Public Presentations and Their Welfare Impacts on Zoo‐Housed Birds

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
Birds involved in bird shows were compared against non‐show birds regarding show paticipation, behaviour, body score condiiton, and feather condition. Additionally, comparisons between on and off show days as well as before and after the show were made to investigate differences in behaviour and condition. Show birds demonstrated a closer to ideal body

Bridging the Late Antique Gap in Northwest Arabia: New Archaeological Evidence on the Occupation of Wādī al‐Qurā (al‐ʿUlā [AlUla], Saudi Arabia) Between the Third and Seventh Centuries CE

open access: yesArabian Archaeology and Epigraphy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In 2019, the Dadan Archaeological Project (CNRS/RCU/AFALULA) identified a Late Antique village 1 km south of ancient Dadan in the al‐ʿUlā valley (northwest Saudi Arabia). Three excavation seasons at this site (2021–2023) have uncovered a massive building constructed in the late third or early fourth cent.

Finite Element study on semi-elliptical surface cracks in a cylinder

open access: yes, 2016
Different types of test specimens were applied in the past for the measure-ment of subcritical crack growth in silica. The rather large scatter of crack-growth curves calls for re-analysis of stress intensity factors. In the present note semi-elliptical surface cracks in long cylinders are addressed. In addition the first regular stress term (T-stress)

Palaeoenvironmental and climatic changes from the lateglacial of the Saalian to the Late Weichselian in central Poland: a multiproxy study from Józefów

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Józefów site is a case study which provides a detailed record of environmental and climate changes and confirms the main traces of the landscape morphogenesis of the Late Pleistocene established in central‐eastern Europe. This study presents a multiproxy reconstruction of palaeoenvironment under variable climatic conditions from the retreat of the ...

1170. Allium kollmannianum Brullo, Pavone & Salmeri

open access: yesCurtis's Botanical Magazine, EarlyView.
Summary Allium kollmannianum is a small, late‐spring to early‐summer blooming Allium, endemic to the Negev Desert in south Israel, and previously thought to be extremely rare and critically endangered. Here we expand new information regarding its distribution and habitat in the Negev Desert, and a new estimation of its threat level, considering the new

The jaws in the jaws: Morphofunctional analysis of the pharyngeal plates of Labrus viridis Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei, Labridae)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Functional morphology highlights the adaptive flexibility of fish feeding strategies across environmental gradients and seasonal variations, providing key insights for the management and conservation of ichthyofaunal communities and their habitats.

Using confocal microscopy and image processing to measure properties of sub‐resolution cell structures: Application to cardiac transverse tubules

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Confocal microscopes increase the resolution of images by rejecting unwanted data from the out of focus regions of the specimen. This incurs a penalty in the recorded signal to noise ratio that may be partially ameliorated by inputting additional information during image processing.

Virtual brain endocasts of the palaeanodont Metacheiromys marshi and the neurosensory evolution of early Pholidotamorpha

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
We describe the endocranial anatomy of Metacheiromys marshi. Decrease in olfaction and eye movement control occurred through time in Pholidotamorpha and is likely linked to fossorial adaptations. The development of the orbital gyrus might be related to the evolution of myrmecophagy and the emergence of a protrusile tongue in early Pholidotamorpha ...

Predicting remaining life in upper sugar-mill shafts

open access: yesIngeniería e Investigación, 2006
A fracture mechanics-based method is presented for determining critical crack size and residual life of upper sugar-mill shafts having semi-elliptical and circumferential cracks.
