PSA Concentrations in Seminal Plasma [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 1998
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is an important tumor marker for the detection and monitoring of prostate cancer. PSA is secreted by the prostatic epithelial cells into the lumen of the prostate duct during the formation of seminal plasma. PSA is a 30 kDa serine protease that cleaves biological substrates in seminal fluid, including seminogelin I ...

Seminal plasma metabolome in relation to semen quality and urinary phthalate metabolites among Chinese adult men

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2019
Background: A growing body of evidence has found links between endocrine disruptor phthalates and male reproductive disorders, but the mechanisms underlying these relationships are poorly known.

Homologous seminal plasma addition to thawed goat semen: impact on sperm quality parameters in vitro

open access: yesAnimal
Seminal plasma is typically removed during the cryopreservation of goat sperm, yet its reintroduction post-thaw has been proposed as a strategy to enhance sperm quality in other species.

Characterization of a seminal plasma-associated inhibitor of human seminal plasma protein kinase [PDF]

open access: yesBiology of Reproduction, 1985
Human sperm-free seminal plasma (HSP) contains inhibitors (I) of the seminal plasma histone kinase activity (HK). One I is dialyzable and the other I is nondialyzable and precipitable by dialysis of HSP against a hypotonic buffer. When the nondialyzable, precipitable I fraction is resolubilized, it inhibits HK in a concentration-dependent manner ...

An intracellular transporter mitigates the CO2‐induced decline in iron content in Arabidopsis shoots

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study identifies a gene encoding a transmembrane protein, MIC, which contributes to the reduction of shoot Fe content observed in plants under elevated CO2. MIC is a putative Fe transporter localized to the Golgi and endosomal compartments. Its post‐translational regulation in roots may represent a potential target for improving plant nutrition ...

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Protein Identification of Spermatozoa and Seminal Plasma in Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Proteins play an important role in many reproductive functions such as sperm maturation, sperm transit in the female genital tract or sperm-oocyte interaction.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Exploring correlations: Human seminal plasma and blood serum biochemistry in relation to semen quality.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Male infertility is a pressing global issue, prompting the need for biomarkers correlating with seminal parameters for diagnosis. Our study investigated 10 biochemical and energetic parameters in the seminal plasma and blood sera of fertile (25 subjects)
