Calcium currents and GABAB receptors in the dorsal sensory cells of the lamprey spinal cord
Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, 1999Patch-clamp studies were performed on the isolated dorsal sensory cells of the spinal cords of three species of lamprey, Ichthyomyzon unicuspis, Petromyzon marinus, and Lampetra fluviatilis, to measure changes in the amplitudes of calcium current induced by GABA and its specific antagonists and agonists.

Effect of receptor potential on mechanical oscillations in a model of sensory hair cell
The European Physical Journal Special Topics, 2017Hair cells mediating the senses of hearing and balance rely on active mechanisms for amplification of mechanical signals. In amphibians, hair cells exhibit spontaneous self-sustained mechanical oscillations of their hair bundles. We study the response of the mechanical oscillations to perturbation of the cell’s membrane potential in a model for hair ...

The rhinophores of the veliger larva of Rostanga pulchra are located in the intravelar field near the base of the velar lobes. Each rhinophore is a cylindrical structure, tapering distally, and covered with a dense meshwork of microvilli. A conspicuous row of ciliary tufts runs along each side of the rhinophore and several stiffer tufts, composed of ...

Schwann cell chemokine receptors mediate HIV‐1 gp120 toxicity to sensory neurons
Annals of Neurology, 2003AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–associated sensory neuropathy (HIV‐SN) is the most common neurological complication of HIV infection. Currently, the pathogenesis of HIV‐SN is unknown. Because there is no convincing evidence of neuronal infection, HIV neurotoxicity is likely to be effected either by secreted viral proteins such as the ...

Determinants of neuron-sensory receptor cell interaction during development of the inner ear
Hearing Research, 1986Trophic interactions are best defined as interactions between nerves and other cells which initiate or control molecular modification in the other cells and/or neurons. Interactions between the neurons which compose the statoacoustic ganglion and the cells which become the hair cells of the inner ear sensory receptors occur during the development of ...

To investigate cell turnover in the vomeronasal epithelium we used electron microscopy to obtain quantitative measurements of changes observed at the surface of the sensory epithelium. Receptor cell degeneration was induced by sensory nerve transection and animals were examined at postoperative recovery times of 2, 4, 6, 10, 15, 35 and 60 days.

Nerve growth factor receptor immunoreactivity (NGFR-IR) in sensory nerves and somatosensory receptors of adult rat dental and periodontal tissue was analysed using a monoclonal antibody (192-IgG) and electron microscopy. In dental and periodontal nerves, the unmyelinated axons and their Schwann cells had occasional labelling of their cell membranes ...

The p75 neurotrophin receptor controls the skeletal stem cell niche through sensory innervation
Developmental CellLow bone mass is frequently observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we demonstrate that sensory nerves constitute a critical component of the skeletal stem cell (SSC) niche. Deletion of the neurotrophin receptor p75NTR in neurons or sensory-specific cells, but not in osteogenic or ...
