Secondary sensory cells in the gravity receptor system of the statocyst of Octopus vulgaris

Cell and Tissue Research, 1977
The presence of secondary sensory cells in the Octopus gravity receptor system has been demonstrated. In serial thin sections of the receptor cells (hair cells) no axons were found leaving the cells. Instead, synapses were observed with synaptic vesicles lying inside the receptor cells.

Extraepithelial cells expressing distinct olfactory receptors are associated with axons of sensory cells with the same receptor type

Cell and Tissue Research, 2002
During critical phases of mouse development, axons from olfactory sensory neurons grow out of the nasal neuroepithelium and navigate through the connective mesenchyme tissue towards their targets in the developing telencephalic vesicle. Between embryonic days E11 and E16, populations of cells are located in the mesenchyme which express distinct ...

Sensory Receptors as a Special Class of Hormonal Cells

Neuroendocrinology, 2008
Classically, sensory receptors are specialized cells which detect specific environmental disturbances and send out neural signals for the integration, control and/or regulation of effector organs. Recently, a special class of sensory receptors called sensori-hormonal cells which employ hormones as their means of flux of biological information has been ...

Development of the Sensory Receptor Cells in the Utricular Macula

Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1978
Normal CBA mice were timed for the developmental stage by the vaginal plug technique. The day of copulatory plug observance was designated as gestation day one. The developmental characteristics of the utricular macula sensory epithelium is described on an ultrastructural level from the 15th to the 19th day of gestation (approximate day of birth).

Micromechanical properties of sensory hairs on receptor cells of the inner ear

Hearing Research, 1983
The aim of the investigation was to obtain quantitative measures of mechanical filter properties of hair cell sensory hairs which were not restricted to move by auxiliary structures. The specimen used was the crista ampullaris of the frog, dissected free and positioned in a fluid-filled chamber where it could be viewed with differential interference ...

The ultrastructure of the sensory hairs of the paratympanic organ receptor cells in chicken

Anatomy and Embryology, 1996
The hair bundle of the receptor cells in the paratympanic organ of the chicken was studied by TEM, after fixation in aldehydes/osmium tetroxide or in aldehydes/osmium tetroxide/tannic acid. The bundles are formed by a kinocilium and by 40-70 stereocilia. The stereocilia are linked to each other by an extensive network of filaments. Three types of these

Noxious heat receptors present in cold-sensory cells in rats

Neuroscience Letters, 2004
Noxious heat above approximately 45 degrees C applied on cold spots evokes a paradoxical cold sensation by activating cold fibers. It remains unresolved whether cold receptors respond to heat as well, or whether noxious-heat receptors and cold receptors coexist in the same fiber.

Sensory receptor-like cells in the human foetal vomeronasal organ

NeuroReport, 1993
The vomeronasal organ (VNO) was studied in ten human foetuses, 12 to 36 weeks old. At 12 to 23 weeks, it was lined by a smooth pseudostratified epithelium, with neurone-specific enolase (NSE) positive cells looking like olfactory receptors. Clusters of NSE-positive cells were seen in relation with the posterosuperior end of the organ and along nerve ...

Nerve Dependency of Developing and Mature Sensory Receptor Cellsa

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1998
ABSTRACT: Old and recent data concerning development of sensory cells and trophic interdependency of sensory neurons and sensory cells is reviewed for the ear, the lateral line system, the electroreceptive system, and the taste system. All sensory neurons originate from placodes. However, only most ear, lateral line and electrosensory cells derive from

Lamellar cells of sensory receptors and perineural cells of nerve endings of pig skin contain cytokeratins

Virchows Archiv A, 1987
The lamellar cells of the sensory corpuscles of the pig dermis must be considered to be epithelial cells as they contain cytokeratins. The cytokeratins detected are similar to those found in simple epithelia. Moreover, lamellar cells are embedded in an extracellular matrix reminiscent of the basement membrane of epithelium since it contains laminin and
