Pigment Melanin: Pattern for Iris Recognition
Recognition of iris based on Visible Light (VL) imaging is a difficult problem because of the light reflection from the cornea. Nonetheless, pigment melanin provides a rich feature source in VL, unavailable in Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging.

Update of the risk assessment of brominated phenols and their derivatives in food
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2012 risk assessment on brominated phenols and their derivatives in food, focusing on five bromophenols and one derivative: 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (2,4,6‐TBP), 2,4‐dibromophenol (2,4‐DBP), 4‐bromophenol (4‐BP), 2,6‐dibromophenol (2,6‐DBP), tetrabrominated bisphenol S (TBBPS), tetrabromobisphenol S

Mapping an atlas of tissue-specific drosophila melanogaster metabolomes by high resolution mass spectrometry [PDF]
Metabolomics can provide exciting insights into organismal function, but most work on simple models has focussed on the whole organism metabolome, so missing the contributions of individual tissues.

Nanoparticle‐nanofiber hybrid systems comprised of melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), are fabricated through co‐electrospinning, and demonstrate potent antibacterial effects using photodynamic therapy. Upon exposure to UV‐A radiation, MNP‐PVA blend and core‐sheath nanofibers exhibits antibacterial activity against E. coli.

Single‐cell profiling of MC1R‐inhibited melanocytes
Research Highlights Single‐cell RNAseq of MC1R‐inhibited melanocytes elucidates a set of differentially expressed genes with no previous ties to pigmentation or melanocyte biology. This list includes Tbx3 which we show binds to T‐ and E‐boxes of candidate target genes, including those with known roles in pigmentation. Abstract The human red hair color (

Melanin Zinc Complex as a Biocompatible Agent for Clearing Bacteremia
Sepsis is whole‐body inflammation caused by the contamination of blood by bacteria and endotoxins. This study is to investigate the capability of eumelanin pigment to remove bacteria or endotoxins from the whole blood. The natural origin of melanin and its well‐documented biocompatibility makes it an ideal material to interface with human blood, which ...

Development of the Swimbladder Surfactant System and Biogenesis of Lysosome-Related Organelles Is Regulated by BLOS1 in Zebrafish [PDF]
Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS) is a human autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by oculocutaneous albinism and a deficiency of the platelet storage pool resulting from defective biogenesis of lysosome-related organelles (LROs).
