Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine binding to melanin: Some possible consequences for pathologies

open access: yesToxicology Reports, 2014
For many years chloroquine was used as a prophylactic agent against malaria, and more recently as a mild immunosuppressive. However, due to lengthy treatment periods, adverse effects have become apparent, which included retinopathy.

Quantitation of eumelanin and pheomelanin markers in diverse biological samples by HPLC-UV-MS following solid-phase extraction.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Eumelanin and pheomelanin are well known and common pigments found in nature. However, their complex polymer structure and high thermostability complicate their direct chemical identification.

Biosynthesis and Characterization of Melanin Extracted From Solanum tuberosum and Mucuna deeringiana

open access: yesJournal of Chemistry, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
A growing interest in finding accessible and low‐cost sources of melanin has emerged due to its wide range of applications. This work demonstrated the use of Mucuna deeringiana as a source of L‐DOPA, and Solanum tuberosum of tyrosinase in eumelanin biosynthesis.

Natural Melanin From Silky Fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus Brisson): Characterization and Protection of Caco‐2 Cells From Oxidative Stress via the Akt/Nrf2 Pathway

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 3059-3075, November 2025.
(created with BioRender.com) ABSTRACT Silky fowl, a unique chicken breed, exhibits black skin, meat, and bones due to the presence of natural melanin pigments. In our study, melanin from silky fowl (MSF) was isolated using an enzymatic extraction procedure and identified as a unique natural antioxidant.

Bacterial and fungal growth on fungal necromass and its diverse components: Shared profiles and divergent constraints revealed by high‐throughput phenotyping

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 9, Page 2268-2283, September 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract While fungal necromass is increasingly recognized as a major source of persistent carbon (C) in soils, the relative functional roles of bacteria and fungi in decomposing necromass are not fully resolved, and the processes that select for necromass decomposer communities

The Role of Pigments in Light Color Variation of the Firefly Photinus pyralis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
We tested the novel hypothesis that genes encoding enzymes and transporters in pigment pathways (“pigment genes”) produce pigments in the firefly light organ that filter bioluminescent light, tuning the color of emitted light signals to match visual sensitivity. We detected the gene expression of 46 ommochrome and pterin pigment genes in P.

Update of the risk assessment of brominated phenols and their derivatives in food

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract The European Commission asked EFSA to update its 2012 risk assessment on brominated phenols and their derivatives in food, focusing on five bromophenols and one derivative: 2,4,6‐tribromophenol (2,4,6‐TBP), 2,4‐dibromophenol (2,4‐DBP), 4‐bromophenol (4‐BP), 2,6‐dibromophenol (2,6‐DBP), tetrabrominated bisphenol S (TBBPS), tetrabromobisphenol S

Accelerating Wound Healing with Combinatorial Therapy Using Natural Melanin Nanoparticle‐Polyvinyl Alcohol Blend and Core‐Sheath Hybrid Nanofibers under UV‐A Irradiation

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, Volume 309, Issue 5, May 2024.
Nanoparticle‐nanofiber hybrid systems comprised of melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), are fabricated through co‐electrospinning, and demonstrate potent antibacterial effects using photodynamic therapy. Upon exposure to UV‐A radiation, MNP‐PVA blend and core‐sheath nanofibers exhibits antibacterial activity against E. coli.
