Autotrophic denitrification with sulphide in a sequencing batch reactor
Journal of Environmental Management, 2012In this study a sequencing batch reactor was used to simultaneously remove both sulphide and nitrate via an autotrophic denitrification process. The sulphide loading rates were gradually increased from 200 mg S(2-) L(-1) d(-1)-450 mg S(2-) L(-1)d(-1)while the nitrogen loading rates were kept at 450 mg NO(3)(-)-N L(-1)d(-1).

Sequencing Batch Reactor Technology
2010Such Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) processes as Aqua SBR, Omniflo, Fluidyne, CASS, ICEAS and their applicability on a treatment plant are considered in this chapter. Advantages and disadvantages and such design criteria as process parameters, construction of reactor, and process safety altogether with process performance, operation, maintenance, and ...

Development of denitrifying granules in sequencing batch reactors
Journal of Environmental Science and Health, Part A, 2011This study investigated characteristics of denitrifying granules developed in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) run at different cycle times. The complete denitrification was achieved in the denitrifying granular sludge SBRs. Results showed that the mean size and settleability of denitrifying granules were inversely related to the SBR cycle time, i.e ...

Carbohydrate storage in anaerobic sequencing batch reactors
Water Research, 2007This study demonstrates the accumulation and degradation of trehalose as a storage compound in a glucose-fed anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR). One hour after substrate addition, only 40% of the added organic matter (as chemical oxygen demand, COD) was accounted for by the cumulative methane production and soluble COD remaining in the reactor ...

SEQUENCING BATCH REACTORS: A REVIEW
Water and Environment Journal, 2003ABSTRACTSewage treatment using the activated‐sludge process evolved from the fill‐and‐draw system which was developed by Ardern and Lockett in 1914; the sequencing batch reactor is a modern development of this system. Its success is due to modern technology, particularly the programmable logic controller which controls operational sequences.

Sequencing batch biofilm reactor: from support design to reactor operation
Environmental Technology, 2011The aim of this work was to improve the overall understanding of sequencing batch biofilm reactors (SBBRs) from support selection (biofilm formation) to reactor operation (carbon and nitrogen removal). Supports manufactured with different materials and geometries were tested in 2.5 L SBBRs and it was observed that biofilm accumulation was favoured on ...

Anoxic Treatment of Phenolic Wastewater in Sequencing Batch Reactor
Water Research, 2004Studies were conducted on the anoxic phenol removal using granular denitrifying sludge in sequencing batch reactor at different cycle lengths and influent phenol concentrations. Results showed that removal exceeded 80% up to an influent phenol concentration of 1050 mg/l at 6 h cycle length, which corresponded to 6.4 kg COD/m3/d.

Comparative Evaluation of Sequencing Batch Reactors
Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division, 1978The performance of many processes and operations can be improved appreciably by the controlled unsteady operations that are provided by sequencing batch (fill and draw) biological reactors. The lack of design and operation experience in batch treatment has resulted in an experience void that has fostered the selection of continuous flow rather than ...

Aerobic granulation in a sequencing batch reactor
Water Research, 1999Abstract In a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) granules of aerobic heterotrophic microorganisms were cultured. The effect of different operational conditions on the formation of these aerobic granules were studied. The time allowed for settling was the main parameter to select for growth of bacteria in well settling granules.

Bionutrient Removal with a Sequencing Batch Reactor
Water, Air, and Soil Pollution, 1998Removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from a domestic wastewater using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was evaluated at solid retention times (SRTs) of 9.3, 13.8, and 18.3 days respectively. Oxygen uptake rates (OURs) and sludge settling characteristics were determined at each SRT investigated.
