Backward serial learning

Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1963
Summary An experiment was conducted which investigated backward serial learning. The basic design was such that S learned a serial list and then relearned it with the same items arranged in reverse order. Positive transfer was not obtained when it was measured in terms of trials to learn.

Composition during serial learning: A serial position effect.

Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, 1994
Composition is a computational learning mechanism that merges serially performed elementary processes into hierarchically organized knowledge structures. The main goals of this research were to explore (a) the role of serial position in composition and (b) the relation between degree of composition and explicit serial recall in serial learning.

Serial position as a stimulus in serial learning

Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1964
Summary Young (1962) has presented evidence which indicates that S associates each item in a serial list with its distinctive temporal position in the list. In this experiment, Young found that items maintaining the same serial position (S-items) in a second list were learned faster than items placed in different positions (D-items), demonstrating ...

What is learned in serial learning?

Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1965
Summary A transfer experiment was performed under conditions that would permit S s who first had learned a serial list to a criterion of mastery to “use” either positional associations or sequential S-R associations in the subsequent learning of paired associates (PAs) formally comprised of the same S-R connections existing in the piror Ser list.

Serial pattern learning after head injury

Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, 1994
Nonverbal serial pattern learning in patients with traumatic brain injury was examined using a serial reaction time task developed by Nissen and Bullemer (1987). During four blocks of pattern acquisition trials, subjects responded to asterisks appearing in repetitions of a 10-element spatial sequence.

Serial order learning in associative formation

Behavioural Processes, 2004
Serial order learning was investigated in rats by delivering food to two spatially distinct feeders. All rats received three food pellets in feeder A delivered 10 min into the session. Three additional pellets were then delivered in feeder B after 20s, in Group Short (S), or 150 s, in Group Long (L).

Multiple-Item Exposure and Serial Learning

Psychological Reports, 1968
Recent studies show that simultaneously-presented pairs detrimentally affect paired-associate learning. In this study, serial learning was not affected by exposure of the cue item plus 1, 2 or 3 preceding items. The data seem relevant to the issue regarding identity of a functional stimulus; additional research of a parametric nature is in order.

Mediation in Serial learning

Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1964
Summary This study reports an attempt to demonstrate that mediation will facilitate serial learning. The Ss learned, prior to acquisition of an A-B-C-D serial list, a paired-associate list composed of the serial units as responses and the primary word associates of the preceding words in the serial list as stimuli (A′-B, B′-C, C′-D).
