Association of serum ferritin levels with smoking and lung function in the Korean adult population: analysis of the fourth and fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

open access: yesInternational Journal of COPD, 2016
Background Iron-catalyzed oxidative stress contributes to lung injury after exposure to various toxins, including cigarette smoke. An oxidant/antioxidant imbalance is considered to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of COPD.

Balanced Expression of the Diiron Oxygenase BioE Is Essential for Biotin Homeostasis in Elizabethkingia meningoseptica

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
BioE is a new diiron oxygenase that catalyzes the conversion of long‐chain acyl groups into pimeloyl thioester, initiating biotin synthesis. The overexpression of EmBioE disrupts lipid metabolic homeostasis, requiring repressor BioL to maintain a balance between long‐chain fatty acids and biotin synthesis.

C-Reactive protein and risk of ESRD: results from the Trial to Reduce Cardiovascular Events With Aranesp Therapy (TREAT) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: To better understand a potential association of elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) level with progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), we examined the relationship of CRP level with the development of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in ...

Red Blood Cells Internalize Extracellular DNA via Apoptotic Bodies with Clinical Relevance to Cancer Patients

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Mature red blood cells (RBCs) can capture extracellular DNA, with short fragments homologous to cfDNA. This uptake is mediated by apoptotic bodies, which induce RBC oxidative stress, deformation, and accelerated in vivo clearance. The rbcDNA abundance correlates with tumor burden and therapeutic response, highlighting its potential as a liquid biopsy ...

Interleukin -2 ( Il-2 ) and Gamma Interferon ( Ifn ? ) of Lymphocyte Culture Supernatant in Iron Deficiency Anemia Patients with Infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Iron is an essential nutrient for every living cells because of it role as molecule fortransport of oxygen, as well as DNA synthesis through synthesis of ribonucleotidereductase.

Ferritin heavy chain Is the host factor responsible for HCV-Induced inhibition of apoB-100 production and is required for efficient viral infection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Hepatic fat export occurs by apolipoprotein B-100-containing lipoprotein production, whereas impaired production leads to liver steatosis. Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated to dysregulation of apoB-100 secretion and steatosis; however, the ...

Elevated serum ferritin as a predictor of complications in cirrhotic patients: a retrospective cohort study

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology
Introduction Cirrhosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide [1]. While serum ferritin is recognized as a marker of liver injury and inflammation, its prognostic value for cirrhosis-related complications is not well established.

CSF and serum ferritin levels in narcolepsy type 1 comorbid with restless legs syndrome

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, 2020
Objectives To investigate whether cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum ferritin levels differ between patients with narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) comorbid with restless legs syndrome (RLS) or periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), and patients with NT1 or ...

Both low and high serum ferritin levels predict mortality risk in hemodialysis patients without inflammation

open access: yesClinical and Experimental Nephrology, 2016
BackgroundSerum ferritin concentration >100 ng/mL was associated with a higher risk of death in hemodialysis patients in Japan, whereas such an association was less clear in hemodialysis patients in Western countries. Since Japanese dialysis patients are
