On building and fitting a spatio-temporal change-point model for settlement and growth at Bourewa, Fiji Islands [PDF]
The Bourewa beach site on the Rove Peninsula of Viti Levu is the earliest known human settlement in the Fiji Islands. How did the settlement at Bourewa develop in space and time? We have radiocarbon dates on sixty specimens, found in association with evidence for human presence, taken from pits across the site.

Globally, many coral reefs are degraded and demonstrate reduced coral cover and increased macroalgal abundance. While negative correlations between macroalgae and coral recruitment have commonly been documented, the mechanisms by which macroalgae affects

PIK3CA amplification and PIK3CA mutation enhance ovarian tumorigenicity through an activation of AKT, which phosphorylates YAP at Ser127. This Ser127 phosphorylation leads to the retention of YAP in the cytoplasm and triggers RAC1 activity, promoting cell migration. Additionally, AKT activation increases expression of N‐cadherin, which further enhances

Stigmergy in Comparative Settlement Choice and Palaeoenvironment Simulation [PDF]
Decisions on settlement location in the face of climate change and coastal inundation may have resulted in success, survival or even catastrophic failure for early settlers in many parts of the world. In this study we investigate various questions related to how individuals respond to a palaeoenvironmental simulation, on an interactive tabletop device ...

Vulnerability to the small molecule STF‐62247 is observed in SETD2‐inactivated VHL‐positive clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) cells. DNA damage and loss of CDC25A leads to cell cycle arrest in S phase. Cleavage of caspase‐3 (CASP3) and gasdermin E (GSDME) suggests cell death by pyroptosis.

Building Trust Takes Time: Limits to Arbitrage for Blockchain-Based Assets [PDF]
A blockchain replaces central counterparties with time-consuming consensus protocols to record the transfer of ownership. This settlement latency slows cross-exchange trading, exposing arbitrageurs to price risk. Off-chain settlement, instead, exposes arbitrageurs to costly default risk.

Diffusion-driven demographics -- Turing model as a concept for the emergence of sedentism [PDF]
Sedentism was a decisive moment in the history of humankind. In a review article Kay and Kaplan quantified land use for early human settlements and found that sedentism and the emergence of farming go hand in hand. For these settlements two primary land use categories, farming and living, can be identified, whereas for hunter gatherer societies no ...
