Normal and pathological dynamics of platelets in humans [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Mathematical Biology volume 75, pages 1411-1462 (2017), 2016
We develop a comprehensive mathematical model of platelet, megakaryocyte, and thrombopoietin dynamics in humans. We show that there is a single stationary solution that can undergo a Hopf bifurcation, and use this information to investigate both normal and pathological platelet production, specifically cyclic thrombocytopenia.

Current status of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in China [PDF]

open access: yesVirologica Sinica, 2017
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by SFTS virus (SFTSV). SFTSV is associated with a high mortality rate and has been reported in China, South Korea and Japan. SFTSV undergoes rapid changes owing to evolution, gene mutations, and reassortment between different strains of SFTSV. In this review, we

Expert Perspectives on a Clinical Challenge: Hematologic Malignancies and Vasculitis

open access: yesArthritis &Rheumatology, Accepted Article.
Systemic vasculitis describes a collection of rare diseases each caused by inflammation of blood vessel walls that can cause severe systemic complications [[3, 4]](#ref‐0003). The pattern of vascular inflammation and resultant damage is frequently variable and may be mimicked, or directly triggered, by infection or malignancy.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus, Shandong Province, China

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2012
Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, which results in severe illness and has a high case-fatality rate, is caused by a novel bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus.

The value of cystatin C in evaluating the severity and prognosis of patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2022
Background Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a novel emerging viral infectious disease. We explore the value of cystatin C (CysC) level in the evaluation of disease severity and prognosis in patients with SFTS.

A hierarchical network approach for modeling Rift Valley fever epidemics with applications in North America [PDF]

open access: yesPLOS ONE 2013, 2011
Rift Valley fever is a vector-borne zoonotic disease which causes high morbidity and mortality in livestock. In the event Rift Valley fever virus is introduced to the United States or other non-endemic areas, understanding the potential patterns of spread and the areas at risk based on disease vectors and hosts will be vital for developing mitigation ...

Engineering strategies to mitigate toxicities associated with CAR‐T cell therapy

open access: yesBMEMat, Volume 3, Issue 1, March 2025.
This review provides a brief overview of several of the major, and potentially life‐threatening, toxicities associated with CAR T cell therapies and discusses various examples of the genetic and chemical engineering strategies employed to effectively mitigate such toxicities in preclinical models and clinical studies. Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor

Fatal Tickborne Phlebovirus Infection in Captive Cheetahs, Japan

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
Two captive cheetahs from a zoo in Japan died of a severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome–like illness. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus, an endemic tickborne phlebovirus, was detected systemically with secretion of infectious ...

Endothelial activation and dysfunction in severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome

open access: yesPLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2017
Pathogenesis of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) has not been well described yet. Recent studies indicate that SFTSV could replicate in endothelial cells. Here we performed a case-control study to determine whether endothelial activation/dysfunction occurred in SFTSV infection and to identify the biomarkers reflecting endothelial ...
