A return to normality: A descriptive qualitative interview study exploring the patient experience of gout flare resolution

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objectives While the definition of a gout flare is well established, the state of gout flare resolution has not yet been defined. This study aimed to explore patients’ experiences and perceptions of gout flare resolution. Methods Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 24 people with gout, guided by open‐ended questions exploring their ...

Abnormalities of Sex Differentiation

Hormone Research, 1996
Sex differentiation is determined by a cascade of events proceeding from chromosomal sex to the completion of sexual maturation at puberty. Many factors involved in this cascade have been identified. Here we focus on DAX-1, androgen receptor and cytochrome P450c17, and discuss their functions in sex differentiation.

Sex Determination and Differentiation

New England Journal of Medicine, 2004
This review elucidates the molecular mechanisms of sex determination and sex differentiation with examples from embryology, animal models, and clinical syndromes. Sex reversal, defective masculinization, pseudohermaphroditism, and syndromes involving the gonads and other organs are some of the clinical problems discussed.

Sex Differentiation in Mammals

Nature, 1967
Sex does not appear to be determined by the action of conventional genes. Heterochromatin—the substance of sex chromosomes—does, however, provide some clues as to how sexual differentiation may be brought about.

SEX DIFFERENTIATION IN AMPHIBIA

Nature, 1946
THE research which is summarized below was based on the well-known investigations of Witschi, who showed that at an early stage of development the amphibian gonad consists of a cortex and medulla. At a later stage, sex differentiation is marked by an increase of cortex relative to medulla or vice versa.

Abnormal sex differentiation

The Journal of Pediatrics, 1984

[Sex differentiation and sex chromosomes].

Nihon rinsho. Japanese journal of clinical medicine, 2004
The mechanisms for sex differentiation and the genes on the sex chromosomes are varied among different species. For human, SRY is the only testis-determining factor on the Y chromosome and triggers the cascade for male sex-determination. However, even if normal SRY exists, the haploinsufficienty of SOX9 or KTS+ splicing form of WT-1 can cause male-to ...

Sex Differentials in the Earnings of Ph.D.s

Industrial and Labor Relations Review, 1978
Using a survey of two cohorts of men and women who received Ph.D.s in the years 1958-63 and 1967-72, the authors test two hypotheses: (1) that the relatively lower earnings of highly educated women can be explained largely by their career interruptions and by their lesser willingness to accumulate human capital in anticipation of such interruptions ...

SEX DIFFERENTIATION BY LEUKOCYTE MORPHOLOGY

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1956
Following the observations of Barr and Bertram in 1949 (1) on the neurones of cats, several workers have shown that the sex of certain mammals can be clearly identified from the microscopic appearance of the cells of various tissues (2–7). Graham (8) showed that in the embryo this specificity antedates sexual differentiation of the gonads.

Molecular Aspects of Sex Differentiation

Current Molecular Medicine, 2002
Mammalian sex differentiation involves the action of a cascade of genes. Discovery of the sex-determining region of the Y chromosome (SRY) marked the beginning of the delineation of the genes in the cascade. Studies of the genetics of mammalian sex reversal and the embryogenesis of the mice are essential in this endeavor.
