Sex Differences in Cardiomyocyte Connexin43 Expression [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology, 2011
Decreases in cardiac connexin43 (Cx43) play a critical role in abnormal cell-to-cell communication and have been linked to the resistance of the female heart to arrhythmias. We therefore hypothesized that Cx43 expression would be greater in female cardiomyocytes than in male cardiomyocytes under pathologic conditions.

Microvascular Sex- and Age- Dependent Phosphodiesterase Expression

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging, 2021
Objective: The cyclic nucleotide second messengers, cAMP and cGMP, are pivotal regulators of vascular functions; their cellular levels are tightly controlled by the cyclic nucleotide hydrolases, phosphodiesterases (PDE).

Polyandry and sex-specific gene expression [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2013
Polyandry is widespread in nature, and has important evolutionary consequences for the evolution of sexual dimorphism and sexual conflict. Although many of the phenotypic consequences of polyandry have been elucidated, our understanding of the impacts of polyandry and mating systems on the genome is in its infancy.

Simple and robust sex determination in papaya (Carica papaya L.) cultivars using SCAR marker

open access: yesHorticultural Science
For viable papaya production, more hermaphrodite plants are needed than male and female (though they produce inferior fruits). To this end, the sex of the plants must be ascertained early in their growth cycle, which is not possible with conventional ...

Signatures of sex: Sex differences in gene expression in the vertebrate brain [PDF]

open access: yesWIREs Developmental Biology, 2019
AbstractWomen and men differ in disease prevalence, symptoms, and progression rates for many psychiatric and neurological disorders. As more preclinical studies include both sexes in experimental design, an increasing number of sex differences in physiology and behavior have been reported.

Highly sex specific gene expression in Jojoba

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2023
Background Dioecious plants have male and female flowers on separate plants. Jojoba is a dioecious plant that is drought-tolerant and native to arid areas.

Sex differences in sex chromosome gene expression in mouse brain [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Molecular Genetics, 2002
A major question is whether genes encoded on the sex chromosomes act directly in non-gonadal tissues to cause sex differences in development or function, or whether all sex differences in somatic tissues are induced by gonadal secretions. As part of this question we asked whether mouse X-Y homologous gene pairs are expressed in brain in a sex-specific ...

Sex-Specific Selection and Sex-Biased Gene Expression in Humans and Flies. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Genetics, 2016
Sexual dimorphism results from sex-biased gene expression, which evolves when selection acts differently on males and females. While there is an intimate connection between sex-biased gene expression and sex-specific selection, few empirical studies have
