Reversal of Secondary Flows in a Sharp Channel Bend
Coastal Engineering Journal, 2016Field observations of the currents at a bending channel in the Abashiri River in Hokkaido, Japan have revealed an unexpected secondary circulation during flood tide with near-bed and near-surface c...

Secondary flow in sharp open-channel bends
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2004Secondary currents are a characteristic feature of flow in open-channel bends. Besides the classical helical motion (centre-region cell), a weaker and smaller counter-rotating circulation cell (outer-bank cell) is often observed near the outer bank, which is believed to play an important role in bank erosion processes.

Air trenches for sharp silica waveguide bends
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2002Air trench structures for reduced-size bends in low-index contrast waveguides are proposed. To minimize junction loss, the structures are designed to provide adiabatic mode shaping between low- and high-index contrast regions, which is achieved by the introduction of "cladding tapers." Drastic reduction in effective bend radius is predicted. We present

Acoustic propagation in rigid sharp bends and branches
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1980The linear acoustic propagation in rigid planar sharp bends and bifurcation ducts is analyzed using a Green’s-function integral technique often known as the surface element method. The acoustic characteristics of the sharp bend differ substantially from those of a circular bend with identical turning angle, width, and centerline length.

Fabrication of metallic nanoslit waveguides with sharp bends
Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology B: Microelectronics and Nanometer Structures Processing, Measurement, and Phenomena, 2008Metallic nanoslit waveguides are promising candidates for ultrahigh-density optical interconnections. A variety of devices based on metallic nanoslit waveguides have already been proposed that show a great superiority over conventional photonic devices for compactness.

High Transmission through Sharp Bends in Photonic Crystal Waveguides
Physical Review Letters, 1996We demonstrate highly efficient transmission of light around sharp corners in photonic band-gap waveguides. Numerical simulations reveal complete transmission at certain frequencies, and very high transmission $(g95%)$ over wide frequency ranges. High transmission is observed even for 90\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} bends with zero radius of ...

Study of flow behaviour in sharp and mitred pipe bends
Materials Today: Proceedings, 2020Abstract The present work compares the flow characteristics of a single phase fluid flowing through two vertical pipe bend assemblies: sharp (S) and mitred (M), using CFD. Both the ‘S’ and ‘M’ pipe bend assemblies have circular section with double bends each having a 90° flow turning angle. The ‘S’ bends has a single weld joint and the ‘M’ bends were

Polarization insensitive photonic devices: Waveguides, splitter, and sharp bends
2012 14th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2012There have been huge efforts performed on the study of photonic crystals due to their potential to manipulate the flow of light waves at the optical domain. One of the precious features of the photonic crystals is that they have photonic band gaps, i.e. frequency bands in which optical modes are suppressed to exist.

Ultra‐Sharp Multimode Waveguide Bends with Subwavelength Gratings
Laser & Photonics Reviews, 2019AbstractMode‐division multiplexing (MDM) is attractive to enhance the link capacity of optical interconnects by using multiple mode‐channels in multimode bus waveguides. As sharp waveguide bends are very important for realizing dense photonic integrated circuits, here ultra‐sharp multimode waveguide bends for MDM systems are proposed and demonstrated ...

Low loss sharp photonic crystal waveguide bends
Optics Communications, 2015Abstract In this paper we study slot structures in the 120° photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) bends. We find that the transmission characteristics of the slotted PCW bend can be simply predicted by analyzing the corresponding straight PCW. According to our mode analysis for straight PCW, the slot structure blue shifts the stopband of the fundamental ...
