Ultra-Sharp Multimode Waveguide Bends with Dual Polarizations
Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2020A silicon-based on-chip ultra-sharp multimode waveguide bend (MWB) is proposed to work for dual polarizations by introducing modified Euler-curves and shallowly-etched non-uniform subwavelength-gratings (SWGs). For the designed 90° MWB with a core width of 1.01 μm and an effective bending radius as small as 10 μm, the excess losses are less than 0.23 ...

Supercritical flow in sharp bends
2001The paper deals with the behaviour of supercritical free surface flows in bends, when the usual hypothesis of small width/curvature radius ratio does not hold. In such a case, one dimensional models are not suitable to reproduce the physics of the phenomenon, and two dimensional modelling is required.

Transformation-optical design of sharp waveguide bends and corners
Applied Physics Letters, 2008Transformation optics is a recently appreciated approach for designing complex electromagnetic media. Here, we describe the extension of transformation optical techniques to include waveguide boundary conditions. We illustrate the use of finite embedded coordinate transformations to design a medium that can be incorporated into a waveguide bend or ...

Pressure Losses and Flow Maldistribution in Ducts with Sharp Bends
Chemical Engineering Research and Design, 2004Pipelines and ducting systems used in process industry applications are characterized by large sizes, sharp bends and successive bends connected by short straight sections. Systematic studies of such flow situations have not been reported in the literature and the design of such ducting systems is based on rules of thumb and scaled-model testing ...

Sharp trench waveguide bend with photonic crystals: simulation, fabrication and characterization
SPIE Proceedings, 2007In this paper, a three dimensional analysis of an ultra-compact sharp trench waveguide bend structure modified with small local photonic crystals is presented. The structure used here is based on a previous proposal [1]. To fully investigate the behavior of the structure, especially mode coupling and off plane radiation losses - (that are ignored in

A new sharp-crease bending element for folding and wrinkling surfaces and volumes
Proceedings of the 14th ACM SIGGRAPH / Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation, 2015We present a novel sharp-crease bending element for the folding and wrinkling of surfaces and volumes. Based on a control curve specified by an artist or derived from internal stresses of a simulation, we create a piecewise linear curve at the resolution of the computational mesh.

Influences of sharp toroidal bends on the tuning of wind instruments.
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1996A toroidal bend causes tuning changes, which are mode dependent and may amount to 10 cents. This is caused by a change of the inertance in the bend, whereas the compliance is not affected. The inertance change was studied by Nederveen [Acoustical Aspects of Woodwind Instruments (1969)], Rostafinski [J. Acoust. Soc. Am.
