Multiscale numerical sensitivity simulations of a mesoscale gravity‐wave event

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
High‐resolution WRF simulations of the February 14–15, 1992 STORM‐FEST event show that mesoscale gravity‐wave genesis occurs via geostrophic adjustment within an upper‐level unbalanced jet, while wave ducting governs maintenance. High‐resolution (1 km), improved physical parameterization, and targeted sensitivity simulations demonstrate that upstream ...

Multiscale controls on diurnal convection in the Maritime Continent: Insights from high‐resolution observations in Timika

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Across the Maritime Continent, diurnal rainfall variability is governed by interactions between regional‐scale atmospheric drivers and local land–sea breeze circulations. Afternoon convection is initiated over land by surface heating and propagates offshore, whereas morning rainfall develops over adjacent seas and moves inland under low‐level northerly

Object‐based deep learning for probabilistic convective‐core nowcasting from satellite data

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
Convective cores detected from Meteosat infrared imagery are represented as compact physical objects to generate probabilistic nowcasts up to 6 h ahead. A spatio‐temporal transformer models interactions among evolving core populations and produces gridded probability forecasts across the western Sahel.

A review of empirical dam breach models

open access: yesRiver, EarlyView.
Abstract Dam breach modelling is central to flood risk assessment, yet the empirical models commonly used for estimating breach parameters display considerable variability and uncertainty. This review evaluates the performance of widely applied empirical dam breach models and identifies those that consistently show lower uncertainty, such as the ...

A Compact Annular Electrostatic Clutch Joint: Dynamic Response Modeling and Time‐Sharing Control for Underactuated Robots

open access: yesSmartBot, EarlyView.
Electrostatic clutches offer programmable variable stiffness for multi‐DOF robots, but their continuous motion is usually bottlenecked by spatial constraints and detachment delays. Here, the authors report a compact annular electrostatic clutch joint with a biphasic amplitude‐frequency modulation strategy to rapidly mitigate residual polarization ...
