Shear and membrane locking in curved C0 elements

Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, 1983
Abstract Locking phenomena in C 0 curved finite elements are studied for displacement, hybrid-stress and mixed formulations. It is shown that for a curved beam element, shear and membrane locking are interrelated and either shear or membrane underintegration can alleviate it.

Lock-on characteristics of a cavity shear layer

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2003
Abstract This investigation focuses on defining the lock-on regions of a cavity shear layer subject to local periodic excitations. A circular cylinder of small diameter (d=4 mm), located very close to the upstream edge of cavity, is used to generate the local periodic excitations in the form of oscillatory rotation about its center with various ...

On vortex locking-on phenomenon for a cable in linear shear flow

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1983
Abstract Resonant self-excited oscillation phenomenon for a cable in linear shear flow was investigated by an experimental study. The so-called complete locking-on of the vortex shedding to the cable oscillation is found to be a result of synchronization of modulated Karman vortices and motion induced vortices.

Resolving membrane and shear locking phenomena in curved shear‐deformable axisymmetric shell elements

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 1988
AbstractA simple two‐node axisymmetric shell element with shallowly curved meridian assumptions and the inclusion of shear deformation and rotary inertia is presented. The principal developments include: (a) consistent resolution of the membrane and shear related excessive stiffening (locking) via anisoparametric interpolations of the displacement ...

On shear and extensional locking in nonlinear composite beams

Engineering Structures, 2004
A displacement beam finite element is derived based on a nonlinear kinematic model for a pretwisted composite beam. Elements based on linear, quadratic and cubic interpolation functions are developed. The reduced/selective integration technique is employed to investigate shear and membrane locking for each type of element. Various numerical integration

The interpretation of the shear locking in beam elements

Computers & Structures, 1990
Abstract A new concept of explanation of the shear locking phenomenon occurring in the Timoshenko beam is presented. Instead of element matrix analysis the global expression of the equilibrium equation for a whole beam is considered. Based on the element stiffness matrix the equilibrium conditions for a regular discretized beam are derived in the ...

Shearing stellar interferometer 2: Optoelectronic phase-locked system

Applied Optics, 1985
A parellel-shear interferometer was built which is able to provide the visibility of celestial objects in real time in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. The interferometer consists of two beam splitters and a modulating/shearing element and is stable and efficient.
