Secondary Photocrosslinking of Injectable Shear‐Thinning Dock‐and‐Lock Hydrogels

Advanced Healthcare Materials, 2013
AbstractShear‐thinning hydrogels are useful in numerous applications, including as injectable carriers that act as scaffolds to support cell and drug therapies. Here, we describe the engineering of a self‐assembling Dock‐and‐Lock (DnL) system that forms injectable shear‐thinning hydrogels using molecular recognition interactions that also possess photo‐

On shear flow single mode lock-in with both cross-flow and in-line lock-in mechanisms

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2006
Abstract A long flexible cylinder exposed to ocean currents is known to undergo vortex-induced vibration (VIV). In a spatially sheared flow the response of a riser to VIV can vary from single mode lock-in to multimodal. A new experimental facility was designed and built to investigate the above-mentioned areas.

The effect of Lagrangian chaos on locking bifurcations in shear flows

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2002
The effect of an externally imposed perturbation on an unstable or weakly stable shear flow is investigated, with a focus on the role of Lagrangian chaos in the bifurcations that occur. The external perturbation is at rest in the laboratory frame and can form a chain of resonances or cat’s eyes where the initial velocity vx0(y) vanishes. If in addition

THE OCCURRENCE OF LOCK-IN UNDER HIGHLY SHEARED CONDITIONS

Journal of Fluids and Structures, 1996
Abstract Experimental results are presented which show that two dimensionless parameters may be used to predict the likelihood of lock-in under sheared flow conditions. One parameter isNs,the number of potentially responding modes within the vortex-shedding frequency bandwidth generated by the sheared flow.

Penetration into targets described by locked hydrostats and shear strength

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1981
Abstract The penetration of projectiles with conical and ogival nose shapes into target media described by a locked hydrostat and a linear shear failure-pressure relation is investigated. A cylindrical cavity expansion approximation is employed which idealizes the target as thin independent layers normal to the penetration direction and permits one ...

Locking and shear scaling factors in C° bending elements

Computers & Structures, 1986
Abstract Two types of locking are identified in linear field C° elements: locking caused by shear resistance in constant curvature deformation and in linear curvature deformation, respectively. Locking of the first type can be ameliorated by decoupling constant curvature bending from shear, which in some elements can be achieved by selective reduced ...

Shear Deformation of Locked Sand in Triaxial Compression

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2000
Abstract Dense, uncemented, locked Athabasca oil sand specimens were tested in drained triaxial compression with enlarged lubricated platen ends. Computer tomography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging techniques were used to examine the micro-structural features of the intact and sheared specimens.

Meshless formulation for shear-locking free bending elements

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2001
An improved version of the Element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is presented here for addressing the problem of transverse shear locking in shear-deformable beams with a high length over thickness ratio. Based upon Timoshenko`s theory of thick beams, it has been recognized that shear locking will be completely eliminated if the rotation field is ...

Shear strength, interparticle locking, and dilatancy of granular materials

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2007
The effect of particle angularity on the strength and dilation of granular materials is investigated through a series of laboratory tests on two materials, Ottawa standard sand (Sand O) and crushed limestone (Sand L), that are made up of rounded and angular particles, respectively.
