Rest breaks – a countermeasure for work-related injuries?

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, 2014
The main idea behind supplementary rest breaks within a work shift is to promote recovery from work, a process known to be important for health in the long-run (1). Supplementary rest breaks are also used to promote occupational safety.

Investigating the Correlation between Shift Work and Job Commitment and the Mediating Role of Work-Life Balance among Emergency Medical Personnel [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Social Behavior and Community Health, 2023
Background: Shift work is a job stressor. Health service is one of the centers where shift work is an integral part, and the level of job commitment in staff has a significant impact on service delivery.

Effect of Order-Parameter Suppression on Scattering by Isolated Impurities in Asymmetric Bands

open access: yes, 1999
The single-impurity problem in d-wave superconductors with asymmetric bands is discussed. The effect of local order parameter suppression near the impurity is to shift the quasiparticle resonance. Contrary to previous work [A. Shnirman et al., Phys. Rev.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Shift work, sleep, and sleepiness - differences between shift schedules and systems

open access: yesScandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, 2010
In this narrative review, we examined what level of research evidence is available that shift workers’ sleep–wake disturbances can be minimized through ergonomic shift scheduling.

Night-shift work duration and breast cancer risk: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

open access: yesBMC Women's Health, 2021
Background The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified shift work as a possible human carcinogen. The results of systematic on this topic is contradictory. This systematic review and meta-analysis, therefore, aimed to update the

On-the-fly computation of frontal orbitals in density matrix expansions

open access: yes, 2017
Linear scaling density matrix methods typically do not provide individual eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the Fock/Kohn-Sham matrix, so additional work has to be performed if they are needed.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
