The Virulence Plasmids of Shigella flexneri
2009Shigella species and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli possess a large virulence plasmid that carries the genes necessary for invasion and colonization of the epithelial cell layer of the human gut resulting in dysentery. The plasmid is a hybrid molecule with a complex evolutionary history.
