Initiation and growth behavior of very-long microstructurally short fatigue cracks

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2013
The present paper describes a novel experimental technique recently presented that allows one to study interactions between the crack and microstructural barriers with an unprecedented level of ease and detail. The method consists in increasing the grain

Load transfer-crack width relation of non-dowelled jointed plain concrete short slabs

open access: yesThe Baltic Journal of Road and Bridge Engineering, 2018
Non-dowelled short slabs are a cost-effective innovation of jointed plain concrete pavements. The development of this innovation has been concentrated in their structural performance.

Fatigue crack growth in an aluminum alloy: Avalanches and coarse graining to growth laws

open access: yesPhysical Review Research, 2021
In fatigue fracture the crack growth is slow and in many materials exhibits apparent self-similarity as expressed by the dependence of the growth velocity on a stress intensity factor that grows with the crack size.

Discerning protein pools by selective staining with self‐labeling tags

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cell surface proteins have an intra‐ and extracellular pool. Combining genetic fusion to self‐labeling tags that can be addressed with small molecule fluorophores allows separating these pools. We highlight recent developments and techniques for state‐of‐the‐art interrogation of cell surface proteins in the complex tissue setting.

Multi-challenge aspects in fatigue due to the combined occurrence of multiaxiality, variable amplitude loading, and size effects

open access: yesFracture and Structural Integrity, 2015
The three major issues which contribute to uncertainties in fatigue life estimations are the limited transferability of material data obtained in a laboratory for describing the fatigue behavior of components, the lack of damage accumulation rules to ...

Hydrogen Embrittlement Mechanism in Fatigue Behaviour of Austenitic and Martensitic Stainless Steels

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2018
In the present study, the influence of hydrogen on the fatigue behaviour of the high strength martensitic stainless steel X3CrNiMo13-4 and the metastable austenitic stainless steels X2Crni19-11 with various nickel contents was examined in the low and ...

Study on the stress field concentration at the tip of elliptical cracks

open access: yesReviews on Advanced Materials Science, 2022
The holes and defects in rock materials have a great impact on the mechanical properties and failure mechanism of rock, cracks often appear in the form of flat ellipses in natural rock mass, and the current research is still insufficient.

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Liver organoids: modelling complexity in homeostasis and disease

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Studying liver in vitro has been challenging because simple 2D cell cultures fail to capture liver's cellular and architectural complexity. To bridge this gap, scientists increasingly use organoids, 3D liver models which better mimic liver composition and function. This review examines recent advances in liver organoid complexity and realism, discusses

Epigenetic reprogramming of lineage switching in cancer

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cancer cells rarely commit to a single identity. Epigenetic mechanisms and tumor microenvironment cues push epithelial cells toward flexible, hybrid states that can shift into mesenchymal, neuroendocrine, or stem‐like fates, driving metastasis, drug resistance, and tumor heterogeneity. Targeting the epigenetic regulators behind these transitions, using
