Crack closure and the growth of short and long fatigue cracks

Scripta Metallurgica, 1984
A general framework for the analysis of both short and long cracks is presented which relies importantly on crack closure. The analysis indicates that the growth of very short cracks is length independent. Since closure decreases with an increase in mean stress level it should become more difficult to arrest cracks as the mean stress level increases ...

Short Fatigue Cracks

1983
Short fatigue cracks are the linkage of the initiation stage to the long crack growth which can be described by linear elastic fracture mechanics. Because some cracks can initiate then cease to grow, short cracks are important in the definition of fatigue limits.

THE FORMULATION OF A CRACK GROWTH EQUATION FOR SHORT CRACKS

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures, 1982
— This work proposes a crack growth equation for short cracks, defined for cracks which have yet to cross the first grain boundary. This crack growth law is used in conjunction with a Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics formulation to describe the complete crack growth behaviour from initiation to failure.

Weight functions for short cracks

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1994
Abstract Weight functions for the screening of short cracks in the presence of dislocations are computed. The stresses are integrated from a known reference state to give the stress functions for three modes. The derivative of these with respect to the crack length is the weight function.

Viscoelastic short cracks propagation

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2022
It is known that energy balance is the correct criterion for large enough cracks, as otherwise the limit (cohesive) strength dominates, and this is the reason for many examples in Nature of “flaw insensitive” design at very small scales. These concepts have so far been proposed only for elastic materials, neglecting the effect of viscoelasticity.

Propagation of short fatigue cracks

International Metals Reviews, 1984
Fatigue crack propagation in engineering materials has been the subject of considerable research, and extensive review articles have appeared over the past several years. Most of these investigations focused on the behaviour of ‘long’ fatigue cracks, even though the characteristics associated with the extension of small cracks in ...

Fatigue notch factor and short crack propagation

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2008
Abstract This paper addresses the problem of high cycle fatigue at notches and the role of short crack propagation in the fatigue notch factor kf. Ahead of a V-notched feature, the stress field is characterized by two parameters, i.e. the stress concentration factor kt and the normalized notch stress intensity factor kn. Whether fatigue strength at a

Short Crack Growth Behavior

1997
We have re-evaluated short crack growth behavior using concepts developed recently, and we show that these concepts provide a unified framework that can explain both short and long crack growth behavior without resorting to the crack closure effect. We consider that the behavior of long cracks, including the effects of load ratio, R, is fundamental. We

A NOTE ON MODELLING SHORT FATIGUE CRACK BEHAVIOUR

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1998
Based upon experimental short fatigue crack growth data and adopting the Brown–Hobson model, new crack growth equations have been derived in an attempt to describe more precisely short fatigue crack growth behaviour that separates the physically small crack regime from the long crack regime.

J-Dominance of short cracks in tension and bending

Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1989
Edge cracked bars with (a/W) ratios less than 0.3 are shown to loose J dominance in both tension and bending under elastic-plastic conditions. The loss of a single parameter characterisation of the crack tip field is associated both with negative T stresses under elastically contained plasticity and finally with the development of plasticity to the ...
