An Antemortem Malaligned Femoral Fracture in a Pre‐Colonial Southern African Hunter‐Gatherer/Herder

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Physical trauma has significant ramifications on a person's way of life depending on social structure and access to support. Understanding trauma for past people is valuable for assessing the impact of trauma on mobility, functionality, and social integration of individuals.

Unapparent trees: escaping enemies in time by being discreet, unpredictable and inaccessible

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
For half a century, biologists considered trees as particularly apparent to their enemies. But why then do some trees escape herbivorous enemies by bursting buds either too early or too late, leading to phenological mismatch? We hypothesize that such mismatches occur on trees that are unapparent in time – those that burst buds ‘discreetly' (slowly) and

Tall stature and small leaves: ecological strategies that enhance tree growth across the subtropical Brazilian Atlantic Forest

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Ecological strategies reflect the mechanisms used for species to sustain a population. Predicting plant growth in ecological communities is crucial, especially with climate change impacting ecosystem functioning. By employing a large dataset for the subtropical Brazilian Atlantic Forest (BAF), we evaluated whether species' relative growth rates (RGR ...

How size and resource traits control species' biomass in monoculture and mixture and drive biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Humans are driving unprecedented environmental change, causing the loss of species from local ecosystems. This local species loss is likely to result in declines in ecosystem functioning but understanding why these so‐called biodiversity‐ecosystem functioning relationships vary is crucial for conservation and sustainable land management.

Clinical and genetic characteristics of Cornelia de Lange syndrome in pediatric patients

open access: yesPediatric Investigation, EarlyView.
NIPBL variants (78.9%) dominate 19 Chinese pediatric Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS). Universal craniofacial anomalies (94.7%) and developmental delay (84.2%) were observed. NIPBL null variants are associated with severe growth impairment and microcephaly, yet overall clinical severity remains heterogeneous, underscoring genotype‐phenotype complexity
