Impact of an improved shortwave radiation scheme in the MAECHAM5 General Circulation Model [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2007
In order to improve the representation of ozone absorption in the stratosphere of the MAECHAM5 general circulation model, the spectral resolution of the shortwave radiation parameterization used in the model has been increased from 4 to 6 bands.

Contrasting the synoptic drivers of the UK heatwaves of 1976, 2003, 2018 and 2022

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
UK summer heatwaves are dictated by the polar jet stream position and sea surface temperature (SST) variability, affecting the Summer North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO) index. The SNAO can determine and influence the Central England Precipitation (CEP) and Central England Temperature (CET).

Balloon-borne radiation measurements demonstrate radiative forcing by water vapor and clouds

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2020
Solar shortwave and terrestrial thermal longwave irradiance are measured at radiation sites at the Earth's surface and on satellite platforms high up in space, since many years.

Simulations of snow distribution and hydrology in a mountain basin [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
We applied a version of the Regional Hydro‐Ecologic Simulation System (RHESSys) that implements snow redistribution, elevation partitioning, and wind‐driven sublimation to Loch Vale Watershed (LVWS), an alpine‐subalpine Rocky Mountain catchment where ...

Hotspots on cold mountains: Hot flowers as pollinator refuges in mountain ecosystems

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Mountain environments constrain the activity of ectothermic insects. Yet, fine‐scale thermal refuges can buffer these thermal constraints, helping insects remain active in cold conditions.

The Maximal Runaway Temperature of Earth-like Planets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We generalize the problem of the semi-gray model to cases in which a non-negligible fraction of the stellar radiation falls on the long-wavelength range, and/or that the planetary long-wavelength emission penetrates into the transparent short wavelength ...

Systemic effects of sunlight: 10‐year review of cardiovascular, infection and cancer outcomes

open access: yesJournal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, EarlyView.
This review highlights the systemic effects of sunlight and ultraviolet radiation. While UV radiation exposure has known cutaneous risks including photoaging and skin cancer, evidence suggests potential associations with reduced all‐cause mortality, improved infectious disease outcomes and reduced blood pressure.

Urban Shortwave Radiation Trapping: An Index for Pedestrian-Level Radiative Exposure in Dense Urban Areas [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
Urban heat intensification and its implications for environmental health due to solar radiation absorption is a key driver of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, particularly in Mediterranean climates.

A Tropospheric Assessment of the ERA-40, NCEP, and JRA-25 Global Reanalyses in the Polar Regions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The reliability of the global reanalyses in the polar regions is investigated. The overview stems from an April 2006 Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) workshop on the performance of global reanalyses in high latitudes held at the British ...
